THE BIG NEWS

IDF Invades Southern Gaza

The week-long truce between Israel and Hamas collapsed over the weekend. After ordering Palestinians in southern Gaza to abruptly evacuate, the Israeli military sent ground troops into the area. The situation in the besieged enclave remains catastrophic, with more than 15,000 people dead, hundreds of thousands displaced, shortages of basic necessities, a collapsed healthcare system, and constant Israeli airstrikes and shelling.

The Biden administration claims it is pushing the two sides to negotiate. In a conference appearance, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that the enormous death toll and growing settler violence in the West Bank meant that Israel was risking "strategic defeat." Vice President Kamala Harris met with Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, Egypt's dictatorial president. According to the White House, Harris reiterated the administration's opposition to the ethnic cleansing of Gaza:

"under no circumstances will the United States permit the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank, the besiegement of Gaza, or the redrawing of the borders of Gaza"

Biden Losing Support of US Muslim Leaders

Disenchanted with his support for Israel's military campaign in Gaza, Muslim political leaders have threatened to withhold their support for President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. "The anger in our community is beyond belief," said an official from the Council on American-Islamic Relations. While Muslim American voters are unlikely to vote for Donald Trump, their political support is particularly important in midwestern swing states. The anger bubbling up in recent weeks has provoked complex, emotional debates about the political concerns of Muslim American voters and the limited options offered by our political duopoly.

That's how many bills and resolutions recently expelled Congressman George Santos introduced during his abbreviated term in office. "The House did not act on any of them, and all died in committee without a vote," according to NBC News. Only one of his colleagues, far-right Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar, agreed to co-sponsor any of Santos' bills, even as Santos signed onto more than 150 of his colleagues' proposals. The serial grifter, who named bills after Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, accomplished pretty much nothing, except to help pass a bill producing a commemorative coin for the Marine Corps. It was the kind of media-saturated, do-nothing tenure that most politicians can only dream about.

PARTING WORDS

We are not powerless as American Muslims. We are powerful. We don’t only have the money, but we have the actual votes. And we will use that vote to save this nation from itself.

-- Jaylani Hussein, director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, speaking at an event in Dearborn, Michigan, during which some Muslim American political leaders discussed withholding political support from President Joe Biden in 2024.
