Israel War Cabinet Agrees to 4-Day Truce for Release of 50 Hamas Hostages

The Israeli government last night announced, and Hamas confirmed, that the warring parties had agreed to a four-day pause in fighting to allow the release of at least 50 women and children held hostage by Hamas. As part of the deal, brokered by Qatar and the U.S., Israel will also release 150 Palestinian women and children it has imprisoned, and allow "hundreds of trucks of humanitarian, medical and fuel aid to enter Gaza," Reuters reports. Three Americans, one a girl, are expected to be released in the first wave. Every additional 10 hostages released will extend the pause by another day, says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faced opposition to the deal from the farthest-right members of his coalition. "We are at war and we will continue the war until we achieve all our goals," Netanyahu says. Hamas likewise "affirm[s] that our hands will remain on the trigger."

House GOP Takes on Myth That Babies Need Food

Not content with pushing across-the-board cuts to food stamps, House Republicans are also seeking to gut WIC, a nutrition program that "provides breastfeeding support to new moms, and formula and other nutrition assistance to roughly half of all babies born in the U.S.," Politico reports. If they get their way, it would be the first time the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children wasn't funded since its establishment in 1972 – and this at a time when enrollment is has been rising. The consequence, if there's no deal to fund WIC by Jan. 19, will be that families across the U.S. who need help to feed their kids will instead be put on wait lists. It's doubtful that Budding Theocrat House Speaker brought up this issue when he met Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Monday night; though Johnson wrote in 2015 that Trump was "dangerous," lacking in character and unfit to serve, he is now, per the New York Times, "positioning himself as the first speaker to be in complete lock step with" the former crook-in-chief.
