- Dozens of Countries Join France and Britain in Working to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and the US Isn't One of Them "Sidharth Kaushal, a research fellow in sea power at the Royal United Services Institute think tank, said mine-clearing and creating a warning system for maritime threats were more likely roles for the coalition than warships escorting commercial tankers though the strait. 'You need huge numbers of vessels for that sort of thing, which nobody has,' he said." via the AP, the Financial Times, and the New York Times.
- Europe Has 'Maybe Six Weeks or So of Jet Fuel Left' "If we are not able to open the Strait of Hormuz ... I can tell you soon we will hear the news that some of the flights from city A to city B might be canceled as a result of lack of jet fuel," says International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol. via the AP, the New York Times, and the Financial Times.

Another Progressive Special Election Victory in New Jersey
Progressive organizer Analilia Mejia, a veteran of Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign, defeated a "bipartisan centrist" Republican in a special election yesterday for New Jersey's 11th Congressional District seat, formerly occupied by Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill. Republican candidate Joe Hathaway tried to slander Meija as antisemitic for accurately criticizing Israel's genocide in Gaza, but the charge didn't stick with voters; as the Newark Star-Ledger reports, she was endorsed by J Street, "a PAC that bills itself as both progressive and pro-Israel."
According to Politico, Meija's victory speech identified Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and ultrarich oligarchs like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Jeff Bezos as "radicals who are willing to upend our democracy, subvert our Constitution and act with impunity."
"We must stop them," she said. "These radicals will watch Rome burn with all of us within, and they are simply cowards — cowards unwilling to stand up to this madness. But we stand up, we resist, we will not allow it to continue."
Per Gothamist, Meija's platform also included "abolishing ICE, supporting Medicare for All and impeaching conservative US Supreme Court judges accused of corruption." That's the true new center of American politics.
After Deadly Outbreak, RFK Jr. Finally Admits Measles Vaccine is Safe and Effective
Frequently shirtless Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. testified before Congress yesterday for the first time since September, and as the New York Times reports, he belatedly "offered a qualified embrace of the measles vaccine," and "also allowed that the vaccine might have saved the lives of two unvaccinated children who died of measles in Texas earlier this year." It's unclear if his admission represents a meaningful policy change in a regime that peddles antivax propaganda that costs children's lives, or mere pandering ahead of the midterm elections.
But to the extent that personnel is policy, it's interesting that Donald Trump yesterday nominated Dr. Erica Schwartz, who supports vaccination and is "is well-regarded in public health circles," as his nominee to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If confirmed by the Senate, she would be the agency's fourth leader in one year's time. Kennedy's antivax allies are attacking Schwartz's nomination, which can only be a good thing.

- Epstein Scandal Continues to Drag Down British Prime Minister's Keir Starmer The Labour leader's office says he didn't know that Jeffrey Epstein's pal, Peter Mandelson, whom Starmer named US ambassador, failed his security vetting only to have the decision overruled by the Foreign Office. via the Guardian and the New York Times.
- Former Virginia Democratic Lt. Gov. SOME NUMBER
$1,643
That's how much former rapper "Young Cardamom," also known as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, took home in music royalties last year, according to his latest tax filings, shared with reporters yesterday. His royalties were "up only slightly from $1,267 in 2024," the Associated Press reports, and represented a small fraction of his joint family income of $145,000.

PARTING WORDS
"They call it CSAR 25:17, which I think is meant to reflect Ezekiel 25:17. ... Pray with me, please.
"The path of the downed aviator is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of camaraderie and duty, shepherds the lost through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children.
"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to capture and destroy my brother. And you will know my call sign is Sandy 1, when I lay my vengeance upon thee. And amen."
-- Former Fox News weekend host Pete Hegseth, leading a Wednesday prayer service at the Pentagon in honor of the rescuers of downed Air Force crew members in Iran. As the Los Angeles Times reports, the quoted passage does not appear in any version of the Bible but rather appears to be adapted from a famous monologue by Samuel L. Jackson in Quentin Tarantino's 1994 hit "Pulp Fiction," "just before his character shoots a helpless man to death." House Democrats this week began seeking Hegseth's impeachment for abuse of power and war crimes.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo, who has been at odds with the Trump regime over his criticism of their war on Iran, yesterday denounced "a handful of tyrants" who are ravaging the world, saying "woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth." And not coincidentally, suburban Chicago police investigated a bomb threat at the home of the pope's brother, John Prevost.
