THE BIG NEWS

Republicans Are Getting More Comfortable Talking Smack About Donald Trump

NBC News and the Washington Post report that Donald Trump's mishandling of the economy, combined with the latest revelations about his close relationship with the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, not only threaten to suppress Republican turnout in next year's midterm elections, but are loosening his grip over the neo-fascist movement he founded. One in three Republicans disapprove of Trump's economic performance. And a majority of Republicans do not approve of how he's handled the Epstein scandal.

"Charlie Kirk was the last person who could walk into the Oval Office and speak on behalf of the base," the loathsome influencer Mike Cernovich complains, per NBC. "Now it's all donors," reveling in their decadence at Mar-a-Lago theme parties.

Unofficial national security adviser Laura Loomer, meanwhile, tells the Post "that the MAGA base 'has every right to feel disappointed'" over Trump's freshly stated support for H1B guest worker visas.

In the same vein, rightwing hatchet man Christopher Rufo observes that Trump's idea to allow 50-year mortgages is "not good, unless you're a bank."

And Trump has gone to war with his former ally, star GOP fundraiser and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is among the dozens of Republicans expected to vote with House Democrats next week to demand the release of all the government's files on Epstein. As Greene touts herself as the true champion of Trump's "America First" slogan, Trump seems baffled that anyone would challenge him. "She's a nice woman, but I don't know what happened. She's lost her way, I think," he told reporters this week. Sad.

"Don't forget MAGA was my idea," Trump scolded Fox News host Laura Ingraham this week during a sometimes-tense interview. "I know what MAGA wants better than anybody else." Maybe, maybe not – but he's also pushing 80, has trouble staying awake, and requires more and more serious medical attention. It's only natural that Republicans would start thinking about what's next for their party.

Israeli Settlers Walk Free After Torching West Bank Mosque

Israeli police released three suspects after Jewish settlers set fire to the Hajja Hamida Mosque in a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank yesterday. The settlers also burned copies of the Quran and defaced the mosque's walls with racist graffiti, as well as a message apparently taunting an Israeli general who denounced the violence. The Associated Press reports:

Israeli officials have sought to cast settler violence as the work of a few extremists. But Palestinians and rights groups say that the violence is widespread and carried out by settlers across the territory, with impunity from Israel's far-right government, led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who hasn't commented on the surge in violence.

Meanwhile in New York, Chinese, Russian, and Arab delegates to the United Nations are seeking to nix Donald Trump's plan for a "Board of Peace" to govern Gaza, chaired by Trump himself. As Jeffrey Sachs and Sybil Fares write for Al Jazeera, Trump's plan would represent "an overt return to the British mandate of 100 years ago, with the only change being that the US would hold the mandate rather than the United Kingdom."

SOME NUMBER

$500,000

That's how much Republican senators will pay themselves for each time the Justice Department obtained their phone records as part of its investigation into Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election, likely earning many of them millions of dollars for facilitating a crime against democracy. Per HuffPost, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has signed off on the scheme as part of the deal to end the government shutdown.

Trump's Epstein Problem Just Got WAY WORSE

Karoline Leavitt isn't getting the job done. Trump should just get out there in front of the cameras and talk for hours about all this without a script, like he used to.

PARTING WORDS

"If he was some kind of narcoterrorist, then why are we living in misery instead of a mansion?”

-- Katerine Hernández, who mothered three children with Alejandro Carranza, a Columbian fisherman killed two months ago by a US military strike on his boat, refuting Donald Trump's claim that he was a "confirmed" Venezuelan narcoterrorist in an interview with the New York Times. A secret Justice Department memo has declared the strikes legal based on Trump's fabricated claims to be fighting cartels, the Times reports. US strikes on civilian boats have killed at least 80 people since early September, including another four people on Wednesday, and the most advanced US aircraft carrier will reach Venezuelan waters in the coming days.
