Iran Retaliates to Israeli Attack - The Friday AM Quickie 6/13/25

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, speaking to Fox News yesterday about Donald Trump's birthday military parade tomorrow in Washington, DC, said in passing that "we talked to an astronaut yesterday, who's on the moon, who's a soldier." Driscoll did not elaborate, and many speculated he had somehow confused the moon with the International Space Station. Weird! - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

Iran Launches Drones in Response to Israeli Attacks

Israel launched airstrikes inside Iran yesterday, including in the capital, Tehran, striking residential buildings in a neighborhood where senior military officials live. The Israeli attack was wide-ranging; according to the Associated Press, 200 Israeli aircraft hit 100 targets across Iran. The Washington Post reports:

Iranian media reported that Hossein Salami, commander in chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, had been killed, along with Fereydoun Abbasi, the former head of the country’s Atomic Energy Organization. Unconfirmed reports said that those targeted included Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri and his deputy and other senior military officials.

The attacks, coming days after the US evacuated military and diplomatic staff and families across the Middle East, risk provoking a full-scale war in the region. Iran's immediate response was to launch more than 100 drones toward Israel, which declared an emergency. Air raid sirens also blared over the capital of Jordan, Amman, last night, as state media said the country's military was intercepting missiles and drones, although it was unclear who sent them.

Trump will discuss the situation in a National Security Council meeting in the White House Situation Room this morning at 11am Eastern time. Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday claimed the US was "not involved" in the Israeli strikes, calling them a "unilateral action" by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who boasted about the "preemptive strike" on TV, and vowed more attacks. But Israeli media reports that the country's military did coordinate with the US.

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut says the attack was "clearly intended to scuttle the Trump administration’s negotiations with Iran" and provides "further evidence of how little respect world powers – including our own allies – have for [Donald] Trump."

Iran's government said the Israeli attacks prove that its nuclear enrichment and missile programs are justified. United Nations weapons inspectors yesterday censured Iran for failing to comply with its nuclear nonproliferation obligations. Israel already has nuclear weapons, which it does not officially acknowledge.

Report: Trump's Pal Bukele Sent US Money to MS-13

A new ProPublica investigation shows that Donald Trump's favorite South American dictator, El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, not only cut secret deals with the organized crime gang he claims to be fighting, MS-13, but also undermined the work of a US law enforcement task force investigating his government's ties to the gang.

In a previously unreported development, federal agents came to suspect that Bukele and members of his inner circle had diverted US aid funds to the gang as part of the alleged deal to provide it with money and power in exchange for votes and reduced homicide rates. In 2021, agents drew up a request to review US bank accounts held by Salvadoran political figures to look for evidence of money laundering related to the suspected diversion of US funds. The list of names assembled by the agents included Bukele, senior officials and their relatives, according to documents viewed by ProPublica. ...
The investigation was led by Joint Task Force Vulcan, a multiagency law enforcement team created at Trump’s request in 2019. Agents found evidence that the Bukele government tried to cover up the pact by preventing the extraditions of gang leaders who faced US charges that include ordering the murders of US citizens and plotting to assassinate an FBI agent.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that Bukele's alliance with Trump has emboldened his crackdown on dissent, which expanded this week to the arrest of a constitutional lawyer who called Bukele a "despot" on TV. The US Embassy in El Salvador has no comment.
