India Bombs Civilians in Pakistan - The Wednesday AM Quickie 5/7/25

People are having fun with how mad Bari Weiss is that her lame website didn't win a Pulitzer Prize this year. Ego and entitlement can take you a long way in the US media, but there are limits. - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

'Act of War': India Hits Pakistan with Missiles, Killing at Least 19

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says his country "has every right to give a robust response" to a missile barrage launched by India yesterday, an attack that India justified as retaliation for a terrorist attack on tourists in the disputed region of Kashmir two weeks ago. The Indian government has provided no evidence for its claim that the Pakistani government supported the terrorism in Kashmir. Both countries have nuclear weapons, and now the conflict may escalate into something even more dangerous.

Yesterday's attacks by India killed at least 19 people, including a child, and inured at least 38, according to the Associated Press. The targets included at least four mosques, which is part of the reason why Pakistan calls the Indian strikes an act of war "shamelessly" targeting the civilian population. Pakistan claims to have shot down five Indian military jets; commercial airlines have rerouted flights away from Pakistani airspace. Both countries' armies also traded "heavy exchanges of fire" along Kashmir's Line of Control, the de facto border. Civilians in Kashmir say they are "living in constant fear."

Prior to yesterday's missile strikes, experts noted that India's far-right Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi had domestic political reasons for attacking Pakistan, and in that sense, it appears to have worked. Leaders of the opposition liberal Indian National Congress party have responded with praise for the Indian Armed Forces, saying "solidarity is the need of the hour."

New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking Democrat on the Senate foreign relations committee, says she is "gravely concerned by reports of military escalation" and implores India and Pakistan to pursue diplomacy, adding that "the world can ill afford instability in South Asia." Donald Trump calls the situation "a shame," which he hopes will sort itself out "very quickly." Yeah.

Harvard Hosts Pro-Slavery MAGA Writer Curtis Yarvin

The Peter Thiel-backed "neoreactionary" blogger Curtis Yarvin, who once spread his abhorrent views while hiding behind the pen name Mencius Moldbug, has gained a disturbing measure of mainstream acceptance with his benefactors' takeover of the US government. Another Thiel protege, Vice President JD Vance, has made no effort to hide his fondness for Yarvin's psuedo-intellectual anti-democratic screeds. On Monday, Yarvin "debated" one of Harvard University's top-ranking professors, Danielle Allen, about whether the US should embrace or abandon democracy. Harvard's press office tried to distance the university from the event, organized by Yarvin's publisher and and a right-wing student group, the John Adams Society – though the debate was held in the faculty club and, per the Crimson, was "bookended by mingling over drinks and charcuterie." At least five campus cops stood watch over the building, and no protests were reported. Yuck.

$140.5 billion

That was the US trade deficit last month, a record high, and double where it was at last year, the Associated Press reports. Trump is "preach[ing] patience" as the devastating economic consequences of his global trade war begin to manifest in idle container ports and dramatic price increases. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other regime officials will meet with a Chinese trade delegation in Switzerland this weekend to discuss Trump's 145 percent tariff on the former top US trade partner, which Bessent now admits "isn't sustainable."

"'The chances of Alcatraz being repurposed as a prison are about as large as landing a man on Pluto,' said Aaron Peskin, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, who regularly swims in the frigid bay waters surrounding the island. 'If I had my way, there would only be one prisoner in that place, and it would be Donald Trump.'"

PARTING WORDS

"They're not, they're actually not concerned, it's a hit piece. ... Again, hit piece, anonymous sources, disgruntled staffers.”

-- Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, responding yesterday to a New York magazine article from last week that quoted current and former staffers saying they're concerned about his declining physical and mental health and his refusal to follow his post-stroke recovery plan, all of which has apparently contributed to his lurch to the right. The story also quoted Fetterman's arguments with his wife Gisele, who texted staffers about her "fear is something is off" with her husband. Fetterman declined to answer reporters' questions about whether he is taking his prescribed medication.
