Discovery of Buried Mars Ocean Sends Earth Governments Racing to Drill, Baby, Drill

Last month I told you about how NASA's Perseverance rover had discovered physical evidence of possible ancient life on Mars. This week, another Mars discovery made thanks to a different NASA robot raised the possibility of currently existing life on the red planet. University of California scientists analyzed measurements taken by NASA's Mars InSight lander near the planet's equator, and determined that there is an underground ocean of liquid water buried 7 to 12 miles beneath the surface. The scientists do not claim to have discovered Martian life, but rather explain to the Associated Press that "our findings mean that there are environments that could possibly be habitable." Political and business leaders may be less interested in the subsurface water supply for the proof of extraterrestrial life that may be found there than for the fuel it may supply on future missions to extract Martian resources. "Russia and China, both spacefaring nations with a penchant for flexing technical credentials, have the upper hand here," science writer Anjana Ahuja notes in the Financial Times, with both countries boasting super-deep drilling projects on Earth. Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that NASA has struck a deal with BP to develop drilling tech for "extreme environments" including, potentially, on Mars. Space critters beware.
