THE BIG NEWS

Ilhan Omar Attacked at Minneapolis Town Hall

Minnesota Squad Rep. Ilhan Omar says that she is "OK" after a man lunged at her during a north Minneapolis town hall meeting last night and sprayed her with an unknown, light-brown, foul-smelling substance from a syringe. Omar had just finished saying that "we must abolish ICE for good" and calling for the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. NBC News reports:

"Local leaders who had spoken earlier at the event urged Omar to leave the room and 'get checked,' but she said that 'is what they want.'
"'We will continue,' she said. 'These f------ a--holes are not going to get away with this.'"

Shrugging off the assault, she continued: "Here's the reality that people like this ugly man don't understand. We are Minnesota strong and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us." Amazing courage – and typical for Omar, a childhood survivor of war.

Minneapolis Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw and State Sen. Bobby Joe Champion were also struck by the substance in the syringe, the Associated Press reports.

The man, identified as Anthony J. Kazmierczak, 55, was tackled by security, arrested by police, and booked into Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of third degree assault.

Omar is the second Democratic member of Congress to be assaulted in recent days. In Utah on Friday, a man was arrested for punching Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost in the face at the Sundance Film Festival and saying Trump was going to deport him.

The attack in Minneapolis came hours after Donald Trump disparaged Omar and all Somali-Americans at a campaign stop in Iowa. "She comes from a country that's a disaster. Probably it's considered, I think, the worst — it's not even a country, okay? It barely has a government," he said, per the Washington Post. A disaster? With barely a government? Sounds familiar. The White House declined comment on what happened to Omar yesterday.
