COP29 Climate Summit Deal 'Completely a Travesty of Justice'
Delegates to this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, reached an agreement yesterday on funding for poorer countries that will bear the brunt of the damage from climate change. The problem is, the $300 billion deal "requires no specific pledges from any countries and falls short of the $1.3 trillion poorer nations say they will need every year a decade from now," the Washington Post reports. "This document is nothing more than an optical illusion," Indian delegate Chandni Raina said to applause from the outraged attendees representing the global south. That was among the more charitable descriptions. One Nigerian delegate called the deal "a joke" and an insult. Nafkote Dabi, head of climate policy at Oxfam International, tells the Guardian the "shabby and dishonourable" deal is akin to a "global Ponzi scheme." Along those lines, a Greenpeace spokesperson calls the deal a "climate scam." According to the Associated Press, "COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev gaveled the deal into acceptance before any nation had a chance to speak." Not beating the scam allegations!
Will Trump Use School Vouchers to Further Enrich Wealthy White Families?
Donald Trump says he wants to eliminate the federal Department of Education, which he has appointed a pro wrestling executive to lead. In practice, that will likely mean a return to segregation and a massive upward wealth transfer. ProPublica reports that 60 years after Mississippi lawmakers enacted a private school voucher program in response to a Supreme Court ruling that declared racial segregation in public schools unlawful, so-called "segregation academies" are thriving across the South, backed by taxypayer dollars. At 15 of 20 private academies that have received $10 million from Mississippi's tax credit program in recent years, student bodies were at least 85 percent white. At 16 of the 20 schools, enrollments were 30 percent to 60 percent whiter than their surrounding communities – or even more. Meanwhile in Arizona, Politico reports that a school voucher program that opened statewide in 2022 has "morphed over the last two years into a budget-busting free-for-all used by more than 50,000 students — nearly 1 in 20 school-age children in the state," with parents from high-income zip codes abusing "the taxpayer funds for everything from ski lift passes to visits to trampoline parks, a $4,000 grand piano, more than a million dollars in Legos, online ballet lessons, horse therapy and cookie-baking kits" – at a cost of more than $400 million a year, accounting for over half of the state's projected budget deficit.
