Judge Proves SNAP Stoppage Is a Republican Choice
The latest polling shows that more Americans rightly blame Donald Trump and his Republican Party for the federal government shutdown that's making air travel more dangerous, placing undue strain on the families of more than 750,000 federal workers, and threatening to spike health insurance costs for millions of Americans by hundreds of dollars a month. Trump yesterday called on Senate Republicans to nix the filibuster rule to overcome Democrats' block on their benefit-killing budget. Whatever happens there, 42 million people are already set to lose food stamp benefits tomorrow – a wholly avoidable travesty.
Make no mistake, this is only happening because Republicans actually want people to go hungry. As New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani told NBC News yesterday, the disruption of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits "is squarely on the shoulders of Donald Trump" and his Agriculture Department. "They could release the funding, as they have done in previous occasions, and we could ensure that we avert this kind of a crisis,” Mamdani said.
Indeed, Republicans are making sure the military and the immigration Gestapo will get paid during the shutdown. But ensuring that struggling families can eat would be, Trump's USDA claims, would be "exceedingly difficult." Uh, why?
A federal judge in Massachusetts made it perfectly clear yesterday that the SNAP freeze is a Republican choice. In a hearing before Judge Indira Talwani, regime officials admitted "that they had billions of dollars left over across multiple federal accounts, including money in an emergency reserve specifically for SNAP," the New York Times reports. But Trump's lackeys simply can't, or won't, release those funds. Per the Washington Post, Talwani may order the USDA to use those emergency funds to keep SNAP benefits flowing – but even if the regime follows such an order, it's already too late for families in some states.
Many states and cities are rushing to fund food banks, even though it won't be enough to meet the need. "I'm just praying, because it's going to be rough," Ray Bolous, a 73-year-old SNAP recipient in Brooklyn, tells the Times. If I had my way, Trump's $300 million golden ballroom would be repurposed as a soup kitchen.

Trump Taps Out of Trade War with China
Few are saying it outright, but Donald Trump has clearly been losing the global trade wars he started. Yesterday in South Korea, he announced a one-year trade truce after a "truly great" meeting he desperately sought for months with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In exchange for Trump dropping his threatened 100 percent tariff on Chinese imports, and other concessions, Xi agreed to delay by one year the start of restrictions on rare-earth minerals critical to technology manufacturing, and to resume buying American soybeans. As the Guardian reports, the one-year deal works to China's advantage by giving it time to develop more advanced tech.
Ordinary Americans are unlikely to see any benefit. "We're probably worse off than had we done absolutely nothing," Scott Kennedy, a China specialist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, tells the Washington Post. Meanwhile in Washington, DC, Senators voted 51-47 to end the so-called national emergency Trump declared to launch his global trade war – although the House has already blocked changes to Trump's tariffs through March.
Horror Stories Emerge from Sudan as Calls Grow for Sanctions
The paramilitary known as the RSF, or Rapid Support Forces, captured the Sudanese city of El Fasher last weekend. On Tuesday, they killed some 460 people at a hospital there, according to the World Health Organization. Now the accounts of witnesses and survivors are coming to the world's attention. Videos show RSF forces hunting down and executing fleeing civilians, the New York Times reports. Survivors tell BBC News they escaped by crawling on their bellies at night to stay hidden from the paramilitaries who beat them and robbed them of everything, even their shoes. "The situation is simply horrifying," United Nations official Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee told a Security Council emergency session yesterday.
Donald Trump, who claims to have stopped multiple wars in his second term even as he starts more, has done nothing about the situation. Human rights groups and international monitors are calling for sanctions on the United Arab Emirates, the RSF's main foreign benefactor. But that might complicate business for Trump's Dubai golf club.
