THE BIG NEWS
Evidence Piles Up of GOP Failures Before Deadly Texas Flood
Donald and Melania Trump head to Texas today to belatedly survey the damage caused by catastrophic flash flooding that killed at least 120 people, with more than 170 still missing. He's also got some ideas about how to improve emergency preparedness, a concept which his regime has directly attacked as representative of supposed "waste, fraud, and abuse," while denying disaster relief to Democratic states.
"After having seen this horrible event, I would imagine you’d put alarms up in some form, where alarms would go up if they see any large amounts of water or whatever it is," Trump told NBC News yesterday.
Funny he should mention. As the New York Times reports, Kerry County officials repeatedly rejected proposals to apply for FEMA funding for a flood warning system despite knowing that such a disaster was likely to occur. Much like their federal GOP counterparts, state and local leaders didn't want to spend money even to save lives. "The more I'm finding out about it, the more I’m getting pissed off," Raymond Howard, a city council member in Ingram, Kerr County, tells the Times.
That's an experience that's likely to be repeated in other communities around the country that endure disasters in the months and years to come. As CNN and the Washington Post report, new Trump regime rules have handicapped Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster specialists, by among other things "requiring Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem to approve every purchase, contract and grant over $100,000" – which applies to basically every expenditure related to a major disaster like the Texas floods.
"We honestly have our hands tied on a lot," one FEMA official tells the Post. FEMA's acting administrator, David Richardson, has yet to visit Texas, Politico reports, "rais[ing] concerns that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is controlling FEMA's response."
"FEMA is shifting from bloated, DC-centric dead weight to a lean, deployable disaster force that empowers state actors to provide relief for their citizens," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin tells HuffPost and NBC News. "Secretary Noem is delivering accountability to the US taxpayer, which Washington bureaucrats have ignored for decades at the expense of American citizens." Translation: You're on your own, folks. Have you considered moving to another planet where the climate is more stable?

Trump Sows Trade Chaos with Another Round of Tariffs
No one seems to know what the hell is really going on with US economic policy, especially as it relates to trade with the rest of the world. Donald Trump yesterday on Truth Social announced a 35 percent tariff on Canadian imports, although the regime has been unable to offer a coherent explanation as to why. "These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country," Trump concluded in his public letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney. The reason for Trump's new 50 percent tariff on Brazil was more clear: a punishment for the prosecution of coup-plotting fascist former President Jair Bolsonaro. Yesterday President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva promised to retaliate with an equivalent tariff on US goods. Meanwhile, Politico reports that the trade deal Vietnam thought it had just struck with Trump was sabotaged by a last-minute bait-and-switch by the White House, and, per the Los Angeles Times, South Korea's trade negotiators are struggling with similar f-ckery. As for poor Kazakhstan, it's a mystery. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is pushing Asian diplomats in Malaysia this week to rely on the US as a partner over China, which is a hard case to make when the chief executive can't be trusted to honor his word – when he even makes sense at all.

SOME NUMBER
$140 million
That's how much Georgia Republican financier Brant Frost IV stole from some 300 investors in a Ponzi scheme doing business as First Liberty Building and Loan, according to a complaint by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Of the $19 million Frost diverted for his personal use, he spent hundreds of thousands on jewelry, credit cards, and a vacation home in Kennebunkport, Maine – and over half a million on political contributions to far-right candidates. The scam was marketed by conservative media including Hugh Hewitt, Erick Erickson, and Real America's Voice, and praised as part of the "patriot economy."
