THE BIG NEWS

Europe Confronts the Threat from Putin – and Trump

Caught between Aspiring Tsar Vladimir Putin and wannabe dictator Donald Trump, European countries are about to "spend, spend, spend" on a historic military buildup. Under the terms of agreements reached at a European Union summit yesterday, massive sums approaching one trillion dollars could be spent on "defense and deterrence" and military aid to Ukraine. It's a matter of reluctant necessity, prompted by Trump's increasingly transparent alliance with Putin's Russia, his abandonment of Ukraine in its hour of need, and his withdrawl from America's post-World War II commitments to European security.

With authoritarianism spreading around the world, European democracies are looking to their old allies, the United States, as a potential threat. Trump's foreign policy turn has Europe so nervous that leaders are prepared to cross longstanding taboos; Germany, the Wall Street Journal reports, may even build its own nuclear weapons. "I want to believe the US will stay by our side," French President Emmanuel Macron said in a speech on Wednesday. "But we have to be ready if that isn't the case."

Yesterday, Trump punctured that hope. Musing about reneging on American commitments to the NATO military alliance, Trump told reporters that the US would not defend NATO countries that don't follow his decrees, saying, "it's common sense, right? If they don't pay, I'm not going to defend them. No, I'm not going to defend them." He also said that he was considering revoking the temporary legal status granted to 240,000 Ukrainian refugees living in the US, setting them up for "deportation back to an active war zone."

Historically speaking, arms races in Europe don't end well. But this is the reality the world is facing, thanks to Putin, Trump and his Republican Party. The reality is, without the US, Europe's front-line defenses would reportedly last "weeks at best" should Putin expand his war on the continent beyond Ukraine.

Europeans increasingly see further Russian invasions as a matter of time – on a schedule accelerated by Trump's return to power. Calling Trump "a traitor" and his oligarch ally Elon Musk "a ketamine-fueled jester," center-right French Senator Claude Malhuret warned his peers that "Putin’s goal is to return to Yalta, where half the continent was ceded to Stalin." With regards to Trump's America, he observed that it took the Nazi Party "only one month, three weeks and two days to bring down the Weimar Republic and its Constitution." Nevertheless, he held out hope that "the confiscation of democracy" can be repelled, because "in American history, the freedom fighters have always prevailed."

"Our parents defeated fascism and communism at great cost," Malhuret said. "The task of our generation is to defeat the totalitarianisms of the 21st century."

SOME NUMBER

$870,000

That's how much Valere Public Schools Superintendent Salvador Cavazos takes home each year in salary and bonuses to run a Texas charter school network with fewer than 1,000 students, ProPublica reports. Board members at the public charter school district have voted to increase Cavazos's pay 14 times over the past four years. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's plans to sign an executive order abolishing the Department of Education were delayed, per Politico, by the publication of an "incomplete" draft, and the White House is now considering gutting the department more quietly, without an order making it official.

Gavin Newsom Teams Up With Charlie Kirk to Throw Trans People Under the Bus

More on this disgrace below.

PARTING WORDS

"History doesn't remember those who waver — it remembers those who refuse to back down. Our message to Gov. Newsom and all leaders across the country is simple: The path to 2028 isn't paved with the betrayal of vulnerable communities — it's built on the courage to stand up for what's right."

-- Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson, responding to Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom's anti-trans comments on his new podcast, titled "This is Gavin Newsom," in which he sat down for a friendly chat with Republican operative Charlie Kirk. Newsom told Kirk he "completely agree[s]" with him on banning transgender athletes from sports because "I revere sports" and trans equality is "deeply unfair."
