El-Sayed Wins Michigan Primary: NBC

Michiganders said yes to Dr. Abdul El-Sayed last night in a tight race with centrist Democrat and figure of fun Rep. Haley Stevens, NBC News reported. By early this morning, El-Sayed had gained 48.6 percent of the vote while Stevens had 47.3 percent. Mallory McMorrow, who dropped out last month but remained on the ballot, took 4 percent of the vote. El-Sayed appeared on MS Now this morning; he also sent an email to supporters with the subject line “We won.”

El-Sayed, a former public health official, ran on the nationally popular platform of providing healthcare for all and making life more affordable. He won despite the $65 million that outside donors poured into buying a seat for Stevens, more than half of which was from a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. 

The race was seen as a big test for Democrats heading into the midterms and progressives came out on top (LFG). El-Sayed will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in November, a seat the AP pointed out Democrats will need to defend to take control of the Senate in 2026. On Tuesday afternoon El-Sayed told reporters that he would beat Rogers by seven points and called him “generationally boring and generationally corrupt,” the Guardian reported. 

The news for progressives was less good in Missouri, where former representative and Squad member Cori Bush lost her rematch against Rep. Wesley Bell, whose campaign and allies “outspent Bush by a staggering 27-to-1 ratio,” NBC News reported. AIPAC shell United Democracy Project spent $2 million on Bell, “largely through negative ads attacking Bush. One such ad slammed Bush for being critical of former Vice President Kamala Harris.”

Three Immigrants Dead in Trump’s Newark Concentration Camp 

At least three people have died at Delaney Hall in Newark, NJ, since Trump retook the White House, according to ABC, The City, and the New York Times. On Monday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the most recent death, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, who died on August 1 after his family said guards denied him medical care, NBC News reported. Some reports say he was 39 years old; others say he was 41 years old, which is also the age that ICE gives in its despicable, victim-blaming press release. On Tuesday, Rep. Rob Menendez (D-NJ), told reporters on a call and via Instagram that another man had also died recently in the camp, and that ICE is not going to disclose it to the public because officials changed how the agency reports deaths so they can hide the true number. That man is unnamed and it’s not known how he died; Menendez learned of his death on July 24. Both recent deaths come after Jean Wilson Brutus died in Delaney Hall last December.

Lopez-Cornejo was from El Salvador and had been in the US for 20 years; he is survived by a 12-year-old daughter, who his mother said is now devastated. His mother told The City, “If there isn’t justice, they are going to continue this way forever, and we don’t know how many more people we have to lose in this country, working people.”

US Running Out of Ammo for Trump's Stupid War

Trump has spent “virtually all” of America’s surface-to-air missiles during the last five months of his illegal and unnecessary war with Iran, according to CNBC and Reuters, which would explain why he keeps threatening but not executing a return to all-out war. The weapons in question are the Army Tactical Missile Systems and Precision Strike Missiles, weapons that are supposed to be very accurate and cost more than $1 million each. If the regime wants to continue to bomb Iran, it will have to do so via piloted aircraft, the Telegraph reported, a riskier move that will mean more dead soldiers. For weeks, military officials have been warning Trump that he’s low on defensive weapons, too.

  • Man Held on $1 Million Bail for Starting Largest Spokane Wildfire, Was Questioned Last Year During Two Fire Investigations A SWAT team arrested 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci on Monday in connection to one of the three massive fires burning their way across eastern Washington, which as of Tuesday had destroyed 700 buildings and forced the evacuation of 67,000 people. via the AP, Guardian, NBC News and the Spokesman-Review. 
  • Awesome New Sea Creature Discovered 6,500 Feet Below California Coast The Erenna siphonophore is a new species related to jellyfish; they’re translucent and they “have these tentacles that hang down with little branches that stick off of them, like little fingers almost, and they wiggle them around with a glowing dot at the end of it,” according to scientist Steven Haddock. via SF Gate.

That’s at least how much for-profit trade schools have grifted off US taxpayers, by claiming to educate military vets under the GI Bill, according to a Washington Post investigation. The schools vastly overcharge for nonsensical educational programs, in one instance demanding $18,500 in tuition “to teach veterans how to make fake rocks out of concrete” during an eight-day course.
