Efforts to Replace Biden on Democratic Ticket Continue Behind the Scenes

At this critical moment, President Joe Biden is relying on his close family members, including wife Jill and son Hunter, more than his professional campaign staff and White House aides, the New York Times reports. He is vocally "frustrated" that people still doubt his mental competency and "believes his polling should reflect what he sees as his accomplishments." Not sure that's how it works, Joe! NBC News confirms that the isolated Biden has grown "entrenched" in his decision to stay in the race. But "if he is our nominee, I think we lose," influential California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff privately told donors over the weekend. "And we may very, very well lose the Senate and lose our chance to take back the House." Although they've been quieter since the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, growing numbers of Schiff's colleagues, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, agree. More than 20 House Democrats have signed a draft letter telling the Democratic National Committee to delay an "unnecessary and unprecedented 'virtual roll call'" to nominate Biden as early as Sunday, saying it would be a "terrible idea" to stifle debate about whether Vice President Kamala Harris or another candidate should replace Biden at the top of the ticket. But per the Washington Post, the "various panels overseeing the DNC process are stocked with presidential loyalists, so the lawmakers could be fighting an uphill battle."

Biden Still 'Unlikely' to Pack Supreme Court, But Instead Floats Legislation to Reform It

In a Zoom call with the Congressional Progressive Caucus yesterday, President Joe Biden previewed "a major initiative on limiting" the power of the out-of-control Supreme Court – but, true to form, it's an initiative that can't pass without Republican support. As the Washington Post reports, Biden plans to call for legislation in the weeks ahead to "establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code," and possibly to promote "a constitutional amendment to eliminate broad immunity for presidents and other constitutional officeholders." That would all be great, if it had any chance of passing. Biden could nominate new justices to shift the balance on the court tomorrow, but, per the New York Times, there's no sign he's changed his mind about doing that. NBC News dismisses the proposal as "a useful messaging device for Biden on the campaign trail"; indeed, the news prompted a reaction from deranged felon Donald Trump, who felt compelled to defend "our Honorable Supreme Court."
