White House Insiders Offer Fresh Firsthand Testimony About Trump's Hitler Fantasies

In Jan. 1939, the month that the Nazi dictatorship established the Reich Central Office for Jewish Emigration to expel Jews from areas under Adolf Hitler's control, the socialist writer George Orwell observed that "we have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men."

Which is why I've been restating the obvious over and over again, several times a week, for years now: deranged felon Donald Trump is a wannabe dictator who leads a dangerous fascist movement. This isn't exactly breaking news to AM Quickie readers. Even mainstream centrist Democrats are growing less shy about accurately describing Trump as a fascist – unfortunately, that's because he too is growing less shy about saying insane bloodthirsty fascist sh*t.

"As president, you have tremendous — it's called extreme power," he rambled at a campaign event in Florida yesterday. "You have extreme power. You can, just by the fact, you say, 'Close the border,' and the border's closed. That's it. Very, very simple. You don't need all of this nonsense that they talk about.'"

Many Americans understand that "this nonsense" means "the Constitution" and "the rule of law." But the right-wing intellectual heavyweights at the Wall Street Journal editorial board, bankrolled by Rupert Murdoch, weighed in this week on "the 'fascist' meme." Their argument was essentially, "I know you are but what am I?"

But it is not every day – maybe only every other week – that a former member of Trump's inner circle summons the courage to restate the obvious. Yesterday it was the Trump White House's longest-serving chief of staff, John Kelly, in separate interviews with the New York Times and the Atlantic. "He certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure," Kelly told the Times. "He certainly prefers the dictator approach to government." Kelly said he was compelled to speak because of Trump's recent ominous ranting about "the enemy from within" and threats to deploy the military against protesters and imprison his political opponents. Better late than never.

What specific subtype of fascist Trump is remains a subject for debate. His vice presidential nominee, JD "President" Vance, famously described him as "America's Hitler" – make of it what you will. Likewise, I always thought his ex-wife Ivana's testimony that he kept a book of Hitler's speeches by his bedside offered a clue. The Atlantic offers some new evidence here, reporting that Trump mused in the White House that "I need the kind of generals that Hitler had."

When an incredulous Kelly pointed out that Hitler's generals repeatedly tried to kill him, Trump responded, "No, no, no, they were totally loyal to him."

Oh, for sure, boss! How about another delicious McDonald's Quarter Pounder? They've never touched the human hand!

Also yesterday, Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris said that "of course" her team is prepared to deal with Trump declaring victory before the votes are counted on or after Election Day. "We will deal with election night and the days after as they come, and we have the resources and the expertise and the focus on that," she told NBC News. It isn't totally clear what that entails, but President Joe Biden may have a suggestion.

"We gotta lock him up," Biden told a Democratic gathering in New Hampshire. "Politically lock him up. Lock him out, that's what we have to do." Inshallah.
