Bolsonaro Found Guilty and Sentenced to 27 Years

Four of five judges on a Brazilian Supreme Court panel voted to convict fascist former President Jair Bolsonaro of leading a failed coup attempt after he lost the 2022 election, and sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison. Seven co-conspirators – including his running mate, spymaster, defense and justice ministers – were also convicted.

"They acted to hijack the soul of the republic," Justice Cármen Lúcia, who cast the decisive vote to convict, said from the bench, per the Washington Post. "The case files show a coordinated criminal enterprise by the defendants, who adopted the methods of a digital militia to attack the judiciary, the electoral system, and the electronic voting machines."

In a response denouncing the verdict, Secretary of State Marco Rubio singled out Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was targeted for assassination in Bolsonaro's coup plot, and said the US would "respond accordingly to this witch hunt." Donald Trump called Bolsonaro a "good man" and alluded to the similarities with his own attempted coup on Jan. 6, 2021, saying, "that's very much like they tried to do with me, but they didn't get away with it at all."

Bolsonaro, 70, has been under house arrest. Per Reuters, he has said he plans to run for president again in 2026 despite being barred from holding office. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in 2022, is also expected to seek reelection. Lula's Institutional Relations Minister, Gleisi Hoffmann, says the conviction of the fascist coup plotter "ensures that no one dares again to attack the rule of law or the will of the people as expressed at the ballot box."
