AOC Condemns U.S. Participation in Gaza "Genocide"

On a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Israel of perpetrating a genocide as famine overtakes Gaza. Ocasio-Cortez, who has long called for a ceasefire, demanded that the Biden administration stop sending military aid to Israel. The United States government, she said, was "facilitating mass killing":

“If you want to know what an unfolding genocide looks like, open your eyes. It looks like the forced famine of 1.1 million innocents. It looks like thousands of children eating grass as their bodies consume themselves, while trucks of food are slowed and halted just miles away.”

Ocasio-Cortez later expanded upon and defended her speech in cable news interviews, telling CNN's Jake Tapper that Israel had "crossed the threshold of intent" and was deliberately causing mass death.

As part of its siege of Gaza, Israel has limited the entry of aid trucks and allowed far-right activists to block aid shipments. The IDF has refused to let basic items like anesthetics and crutches in while miring aid deliveries in endless inspections. International organizations have repeatedly warned that starvation and famine are spreading through Gaza's population. "The future of an entire generation is in serious peril," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Terrorist Attack on Russian Concert Kills Scores of People

On Friday night, four gunmen entered Crocus, a Moscow concert venue, and shot to death at least 137 people. They set off explosives that caused chaos and destroyed the building. Dozen of people remain in critical condition. A popular rock band called Piknik had been scheduled to play. One of the band's employees was among the missing.

Russian authorities arrested four Tajik gunmen, three of whom pleaded guilty, claiming they were migrant laborers who were hired to conduct the attack. The gunmen appeared in court showing signs of possible torture. At least seven other people were arrested in connection with the attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the men were arrested fleeing to Ukraine, while U.S. authorities claimed that the attacks were the work of a branch of Islamic State. An IS media outlet claimed credit for the attack.

Trump Seizures

It looks like Donald Trump won't be able to come up with the $464-plus million bond needed to prevent the state of New York from beginning to seize his assets. Thirty insurance companies have reportedly turned him down, and even his billionaire backers don't seem inclined to bet so much on a wild horse. Last week, Trump's media company received permission to merge with a SPAC, creating a new publicly traded company nominally worth billions. But it would take Trump months to turn his ownership share into cash. He faces a similar problem with his real estate assets, the core of his wealth, which aren't the sort of things one throws up for a quick eBay sale.

It's possible that New York Attorney General Letitia James will start the process of seizing Trump's assets as soon as today. On Friday, James' office filed judgments in Westchester County in a possible prelude to seizing one of Trump's golf courses and his Seven Springs estate, according to CNN. There are a number of methods potentially as James' disposal, from liens that force the sale of properties to taking control of bank accounts.

Trump, on the other hand, has few options. He may get some help from an appeals court, which could reduce the judgment and force James to work more slowly. Trump could also file for bankruptcy, something with which he has a bit of familiarity. He claimed on Truth Social that he has "almost five hundred million dollars in cash," but, well, who believes him?

While a company breakup is unlikely, it could force Apple to open its walled garden of apps and proprietary features, potentially boosting competition among software makers and making Apple products more compatible with other brands. via The Verge, Slate, and Axios.
Gaetz and MTG Plan to Sue Cities for Canceling Their Events A federal judge allowed a lawsuit to go forward in which Reps. Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene intend to sue the California cities of Riverside and Anaheim for canceling planned political rallies. Gaetz and MTG are represented in the lawsuit by John Eastman, a major figure in Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. via Politico.

That's about how much of a stake in Digital World Acquisition Corp., the publicly traded shell company merging with Trump Media & Technology Group, was owned by Susquehanna International Group. Susquehanna, you may remember, was co-founded by Jeffrey Yass, the billionaire financier and TikTok stakeholder who has quietly become the leading Republican donor of the 2024 campaign cycle. As of the last filing deadline, Susquehanna was the largest outside shareholder in Trump's soon-to-be-public media venture. Pretty good financial backer to have.
