Israeli Government Cancels Diplomatic Trip to DC

After the United States chose to abstain from a UN resolution calling for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza, Israel responded by a canceling a planned trip of high-level officials to Washington, D.C. According to the Washington Post, the Israelis had been warned that the US would abstain from the resolution, rather than veto it, but were incensed all the same. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly accused the Biden administration of "a clear departure from the U.S. position."

The Biden administration responded with claims of disappointment and confusion. The UN resolution's language had been vigorously negotiated over the weekend – that is to say, sanded down.

"We're kind of perplexed by this," said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, as if he were trying to fix a leaky faucet and not stop a genocide.

With little substantive change in administration policy, this is what passes for a "rift" between Israel and the US. Some Democrats are encouraging Israeli officials to come to DC, make nice, and kiss the ring, but does Biden, a longtime sop for Israel, have the fortitude to play the part of king?

Trump Has Doubled His Net Worth On Paper

Former President Donald Trump's media company successfully merged with a publicly traded shell company and is now available on public markets. Shares were priced at $49.95 at the end of Monday – a hefty premium for a company that generated seven figures of revenue last year and has attracted four lawsuits and SEC attention (the wrong kind). But at least notionally, Trump Media is now worth more than $6 billion, according to the New York Times, meaning that Trump's own stake is worth more than $3 billion. Just as his finances seemed to be circling the drain, Trump has become far richer than he perhaps ever was – again, at least on paper – and he's unlocked hundreds of millions of dollars in financing for his newly retrofitted Truth Social platform. Trump's Mega-Bond Slashed to a More Manageable Size

A New York appeals court cut the bond in the former president's civil fraud case from more than $454 million to $175 million. Trump now has 10 days to post the new, smaller bond. While he was apparently turned down by dozens of insurers, Reuters reports that Trump allies were passing the collection plate around over the weekend, gathering millions on his behalf. The effort was led by hedge fund billionaire John Paulson, a Trump fundraiser who is a potential Treasury Secretary in a new Trump administration, and it was successful, according to Reuters. "I'll post either the $175 million in cash or bonds or securities or whatever is necessary, very quickly," said Trump yesterday.

  • Putin Pins Terrorist Attack on Islamist Militants But Implicates Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin said that "radical Islamists" had killed more than 137 people at the Crocus concert venue. But he insinuated, without evidence, that Ukraine may have had a hand in the attacks and that the gunmen were attempting to flee there. via Axios and New York Times.
  • BU Grad Students Go On Strike Some 3,000 members of the Boston University Graduate Workers Union began a strike yesterday. Working with SEIU 509, BU's grad students have attempted to negotiate with the school for nine months over wages, healthcare, and other benefits. via NBC Boston.

That's how many homes owned by Sean "Diddy" Combs were raided Monday by agents with the Department of Homeland Security. Federal law enforcement searched a 17,000-square-foot mansion in Los Angeles and another house on Miami's Star Island. Combs has recently been the subject of at least four lawsuits accusing him of horrific acts of sexual abuse, assault, sex trafficking, and other forms of violence and manipulation. One of those suits, filed by the singer Cassie, was settled in a day. Others are ongoing.

-- United States District Judge Charles R. Breyer, writing in an order to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's X Corp. against the Center for Countering Digital Hate. Musk had accused the group of violating the site's terms of service for how it gathered data on alleged extremists. Judge Breyer dismissed the suit under anti-SLAPP laws protecting against frivolous lawsuits. X will have to pay the Center's legal fees.
