THE BIG NEWS

Bondi Sees Deep State Plot in Sandwich Thrown in Defiance

Just when you thought the authoritarian clampdown in Washington, DC, to preserve the honor of "Big Balls" couldn't get more surreal, there's a twist! The pink-shirted middle-aged white man seen in a viral video throwing a salami hoagie at a "f-cking fascist" federal agent occupying the streets of DC – who was charged with a felony for doing so – turns out to have been a Department of Justice employee. Emphasis on the past tense, because Attorney General Pam Bondi yesterday fired Sean Charles Dunn, who a paralegal who "worked as an international affairs specialist in the criminal division of the Justice Department," the Washington Post reports. "This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ," Bondi wrote. Oookaayyyyy.

The paranoid conspiracy theorist AG also ordered DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to accept Drug Enforcement Administration chief Terry Cole as the city's "emergency police commissioner" yesterday, formalizing Trump's likely unlawful military takeover of the capital. Bowser and DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, "however, called the order unlawful and suggested they will not comply — the first major pushback since Trump exerted control over the police in an executive order issued Monday," the Post reports. DC Police Chief Pamela Smith also said she would continue to report to Bowser, but at the same time, she ordered city cops to report any undocumented immigrants they stop to ICE. It smacks of an effort to save face while giving Trump some of what he wants. Unfortunately, any pushback by DC elected officials is constrained by the fact that the city police union has openly welcomed their new MAGA overlords, as we discussed in Wednesday's newsletter.

The District's homeless residents have borne the brunt of the MAGA occupation, being threatened with jail and having their meager belongings confiscated and thrown into garbage trucks. "You have to move because you're in eyesight of the president," Andrew S., a 61-year-old DC resident who was resting along the route Trump took to the Kennedy Center, was told by federal agents the other night, per the Associated Press. "I didn't really take it serious until today," Andrew added, but the president really doesn't want us here."

Another unhoused DC man, William Wilson, 66, extended a hand to his tormentor even as he was displaced from his camp. "I'd like to invite the president to spend some time here in a tent with us," Wilson said, per the Post. "We're nice people. We're a family here — we get along." Imagine a panicked Trump trying to arrange a decorator to line his tent with gold.

'We Will Not Be Intimidated!': Armed, Masked Feds Menace California Democrats' Event

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom yesterday held a press conference to announce his efforts to combat Republican gerrymandering efforts elsewhere in the country (see below). The presser was held at at the Democracy Center of the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles. As Newsom spoke, Border Patrol Sector Chief Greg Bovino, "flanked by agents in helmets, camouflage, masks and holding guns" led a raid on the streets of outside, the LA Times reports, arresting a "family man" named Angel who was in Little Tokyo delivering strawberries. "We're here making Los Angeles a safer place since we won't have politicians that will do that," Bovino said in a video posted online.

Bovino claimed ignorance of Newsom's location, but as LA Mayor Karen Bass said, "there's no way this was a coincidence," calling the raid "completely unacceptable" and proof of an agency "gone amok." Newsom called the federal show of force "sick and pathetic" and vowed not to be intimidated. William Fujioka, 73, president of the museum, who was at the Newsom event, says the raid "is a parallel of what happened in 1942," when Americans of Japanese descent were "put on buses and sent to camps."

Texas Democrats May Go Home Next Week

The Texas state House Democrats who fled their state to Illinois to prevent Republicans from gerrymandering away their party's Congressional seats may be close to ending their two-week walkout, according to a statement released yesterday. "We're prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts," Texas Democratic leader Gene Wu wrote. "The fight to protect voting rights has only just begun." The group will return on two conditions: 1.) that Republicans end the special legislative session today as promised, and 2.) that California releases its own redistricting map today to counter the Texas gerrymandering effort, as promised by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Newsom's proposed "Election Rigging Response Act" comes in the form of a November ballot measure to approve the redrawing of the state's election map to (hopefully) increase the number of Democrats the state sends to the US House. "We can't stand back and watch this democracy disappear, district by district, all across this country," Newsom said yesterday. "We need to stand up. Not just California: Other states need to stand up."

PARTING WORDS

"When your friend kills 60,000 people and starves an entire population for months at a time, shouldn't the question be: Why the f-ck am I friends with this guy?"

-- An anonymous Democratic strategist formerly attached to Pete Buttigieg, speaking to Politico about the 2028 presidential hopeful's trouble finding a position on Israel's genocide in Gaza. In his rambling response to Pod Save America's questions this week, Buttigieg suggested that the US should "put [its] arm around" its "friend" Israel and "talk about what we're prepared to do together" to improve the situation.
