Ohio Voters Turn Out for Abortion Rights

Republicans evidently see winning blue states as key to gaining control of Congress in 2024. But their extremism is going to make that pretty hard to pull off. Ohio voters yesterday rejected Issue 1, a Republican measure to make constitutional amendments more difficult and seen, as Politico reports, as a way to thwart a November measure to enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution.

Opponents of Issue 1 view the victory as the first battle on abortion in the coming cycle, when the issue will be a factor in competitive Senate and House races that could help determine who controls Congress — as well as a number of direct ballot measures in swing states in the works. ...
Tuesday's election proved that the state-by-state battle over abortion rights is still a serious motivator to get voters to the polls — even when abortion isn’t directly on the ballot.

Per the Columbus Dispatch, the defeat of the Republican measure was resounding, with the no vote was leading 57 percent to 43 percent last night with 80 percent of the votes counted.

In a statement, President Joe Biden called Issue 1 "a blatant attempt to weaken voters' voices and further erode the freedom of women to make their own health care decisions. Ohioans spoke loud and clear, and tonight democracy won."
