A bright and rare spark of good news late last night: New York City Democratic Socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral primary, beating former Governor, establishment favorite, sex pest and granny-killer Andrew Cuomo, The NYT, Politico and yours truly reported. By late evening 90 percent of the results were in, showing Mamdani had drawn 43.5 percent of the vote, compared to Cuomo’s 36.4 percent. The final ranked-choice results will be available next Tuesday; New York City allows voters to select up to five candidates in order of preference. Pollsters called Mamdani’s win “the biggest upset in modern New York City history” and said it reflected that voters are unhappy with establishment politics. 

“We have given our city permission to believe again,” Mamdani told supporters in Queens after the results came in. “I pledge to you that we will remake this great city, not in my image, but in the image of every New Yorker who has only known struggle. In our New York, the power belongs to the people.”

The billionaire-backed Andrew Cuomo, who is credibly accused of sexually harassing 13 women and whose policies led to unnecessary deaths during the height of the ongoing Covid pandemic, conceded. “Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo said. He may still run in November as an Independent but has not yet decided. 

Iran’s Nuclear Program Not Actually ‘Obliterated’

Trump lied when he said Iran’s nuclear program was “completely and fully obliterated.” It’s not, according to sources the AP, CNN, The Guardian and NBC News interviewed. It’s set back just a few months. One of the sources CNN talked to said the centrifuges are mostly “intact.” “So the [Defense Intelligence Agency] assessment is that the US set them back maybe a few months, tops,” the person said. Yesterday morning, Trump repeated his belief that the damage from the strikes was significant. “I think it’s been completely demolished,” he said, adding, “Those pilots hit their targets. Those targets were obliterated, and the pilots should be given credit.”

Trump to Log 58 Million Acres of National Forests

The regime will open 58 million acres of national forests to road construction and development, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced, calling the measures that have protected them for decades “absurd.” The untouched land she and her fellow Trumpian deathmongers want to wreck includes Tongass National Forest in Alaska, North America’s largest temperate rainforest; Reddish Knob in the Shenandoah Mountains, one of the highest points in Virginia; and millions of acres of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho. Environmental groups promised to sue to stop the destruction. “Most Americans value these pristine backcountry areas for their sense of wildness, for the clean water they provide, for the fishing and hunting and wildlife habitat,” Chris Wood, the chief executive of Trout Unlimited, an environmental group, told the NYT.
