Unions Gearing Up for May Day Economic Blackout – The Wednesday AM Quickie 4/29/26
A former Department of Justice attorney, who quit the regime last year and dropped out of the Republican Party, is running as a Democrat to represent Pennsylvania’s 7th District. He says he’s pro-worker. But legal documents show that’s a lie, so I wrote about it. Ok, see you next week! Corey is back tomorrow. -Whitney

Unions, Activists Gearing Up for May Day Economic Blackout
No school, no work, no shopping. That’s the call from unions, activists and community groups planning an economic blackout for International Workers Day on May 1 – the real Labor Day. Groups have planned over 3,000 events, according to The Guardian, more than double the number last year. The economic blackout is inspired by Minnesotans, who halted all activity and took to the streets to protest Trump’s immigrant terror campaign.
“Minneapolis really gave us the biggest push in real time to do it. We have a long way to go to take massive disruption actions like in other countries, where people will go on general strikes and they can shut down their country, but I think we’re getting more and more close to people having consciousness about their own power as workers,” said Neidi Dominguez, founding executive director of Organized Power in Numbers.
This May Day will build confidence and power for the growing movement against the Trump regime and minority rule by the ultra rich. Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities are getting ready for “city-wide economic blackouts.” The coalition in Chicago includes the Chicago Teachers Union, SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana, Indivisible Chicago and the Chicago Federation of Labor, all of which are backing the blackout. In Los Angeles, the 50 groups that compose the LA May Day coalition have multiple demands, including protections for immigrants, voters, anti-war protesters and workers, and abolishing ICE. Per the Guardian:
Pedro Trujillo, director of organizing at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (Chirla), one of the groups involved in organizing the day of action, said May Day had historically been a day of immigration and labor rights groups coming together to advocate simultaneously for these issues, including the day without an immigrant boycotts of about 20 years ago.
“Twenty years ago, we had mega marches here in downtown Los Angeles that shut down the city, and so we’re bringing back that energy of shutting it down,” said Trujillo. “We’re at 101 endorsing organizations. This includes unions. This includes non-profit groups, grassroots groups and faith groups as well, that have officially endorsed our demonstration.”

Regime Conducts Multiple Simultaneous Raids in Twin Cities Over Welfare Fraud
As the GOP loots every American program that provides taxpayer assistance to poor people, such as forcing hundreds of hospitals around the country to cut services and close entirely, and kicking millions of people off food stamps, it’s also pretending to care about welfare fraud in Minnesota, the Minnesota Star Tribune and NBC News reported. Federal law enforcement agents executed at least 22 federal search warrants in Minneapolis and Saint Paul yesterday morning in their ongoing investigation into alleged welfare fraud in the state. One of the raids was at the Somali Senior Center and Adult Day Services facility; racist House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) thanked the Homeland Security and Justice departments “for taking action against Somali fraudsters.” Democratic Gov. Tim Walz praised the raids on social media, saying that they happened because Minnesota’s agencies caught and reported “irregular behavior,” and called on the regime to “work on a joint investigation into the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.” Drunken FBI Director Kash Patel responded as bitchily as you’d expect from Trump’s coterie of prima dons and donnas. “This FBI and DOJ drafted and executed every search warrant today,” Patel said on social media. “But go ahead and take credit for our work while we smoke out the fraud plaguing Minnesota under your governorship.” God. Grow up.
Interior Department Bribes More Companies to Abandon Wind Energy Projects
The pro-climate collapse regime gave Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind a total of $900 million in taxpayer money to abandon the offshore wind projects they were developing, the AP reported. Bluepoint had been developing wind farms off the coasts of New York and New Jersey; Golden State had proposed to do the same off California’s central coast. The bribes follow the Department of Interior’s earlier $1 billion taxpayer-funded payoff to the French firm TotalEnergies, which had been developing wind projects off the coasts of North Carolina and New York. Now the firm will pursue fossil fuel projects instead. As I pointed out earlier this week, Kansas and Wisconsin are flooding, Florida and Georgia are on fire, and Corpus Christi is about to become the first city in US history to run out of water. A 5,000-mile heat spot in the Pacific Ocean is threatening to kill the animals in its path. Some 27 million Americans are under a severe weather outbreak. The GOP refusal to support renewable energy will make all of that worse.

That’s the share of people in the US who told Gallup pollsters that their finances are getting worse, a record high. It’s the fifth consecutive year that more Americans have said so. “The only similar multiyear period when the larger share felt their financial situation was worsening was during the Great Recession,” Gallup said.

PARTING WORDS
“So she is not acquiescing in any way, shape or form.”
-- An attorney for 59-year-old Massachusetts beekeeper Rebecca Woods, who unleashed a truckload of bees on sheriff’s deputies to stop them from evicting her friend, a cancer patient in his 80s. Woods’ friend lost his home and Woods was sentenced to six months in jail, most of which she’s already served. But Woods maintains her innocence and is appealing; all she was doing, she said, was allowing her bees to enjoy the “lovely, flowering landscape.” Good enough for me.
