Trump Test-Drives Voter Suppression on Both Coasts

The Department of Justice will “monitor” elections in Democrat-led California and New Jersey “to ensure the American people get the fair, free, and transparent elections they deserve,” said paranoid conspiracy theorist Pamela Bondi, who is the attorney general. She’s deploying the poll watchers to California’s Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties and to New Jersey’s Passaic County. The New York Times reported that Democrats in both states named what this really is, as a spokesman for California Gov. Gavin Newsom did:

“This administration has made no secret of its goal to undermine free and fair elections,” said Brandon Richards. “Deploying these federal forces appears to be an intimidation tactic meant for one thing: suppress the vote.”

In California, where the state mails ballots to all registered voters, 81 percent of voters cast their ballots by mail. Trump and his GOP confederates love to pretend that America is awash in voter fraud, especially via mail-in ballots, which is not true. In fact, it is “exceedingly rare,” the NYT reported. But that didn’t stop the Republican leaders in both states from writing to the DOJ to ask for the interference, Common Dreams reported. It arrives as Californians vote on Proposition 50 to redistrict in favor of Democrats and as New Jerseyans pick a new governor. In an interview with KQED, Newsom said the Trump administration will not stop at simply sending federal lawyers to monitor elections. “You’re also going to see ICE deployed,” he told the radio station. “You’re going to see these masked men from Border Patrol also near voting booths and polling places.” Newsom said yesterday he’s considering a presidential run in 2028.

The Trump administration detained British journalist Sami Hamdi at San Francisco International Airport Sunday morning and revoked his visa because he criticized Israel, CNN, The Guardian and SFGate reported. Hamdi is the managing director at The International Interest, which covers the Middle East and the United Kingdom, and had been on a speaking tour in the US. The night before he was detained, he had appeared at the annual gala for the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Sacramento and was scheduled to travel to Florida for another appearance yesterday, but bigoted puppet master Laura Loomer sent an order via social media saying she “demanded that federal authorities inside the Trump administration treat Hamdi as the major National security threat that he is.” As of Sunday, Hamdi was still in federal custody. CAIR called for his release and said the organization’s attorneys are helping. “Abducting a prominent British Muslim journalist and political commentator on a speaking tour in the United States because he dared to criticize the Israeli government’s genocide is a blatant affront to free speech,” the organization said in a statement, according to SFGate. “...We call on ICE to immediately account for and release Mr. Hamdi, whose only ‘crime’ is criticizing a foreign government that committed genocide.”

Ex-60 Minutes Producer Urged to Suppress News About Trump, Gaza

If you get the sense that the mainstream media is working overtime to avoid telling you what’s going on, you are right. Former 60 Minutes producer Bill Owens described on Friday how right-wing executives were suppressing certain stories, long before right-wing opinion columnist Bari Weiss arrived at parent company CBS, The Guardian reported. While receiving an award for courage in journalism, Owens told an audience that executives and others repeatedly told him to stop covering Gaza and Trump. Bringing up Gaza coverage “was like hitting a hornet’s nest,” he said. He once received a call from a higher-up asking, “Do you need to mention Trump’s name that often?” as if the guy isn’t, you know, the commander-in-chief and the most powerful person in the world. Executives pressured Owens to apologize for an interview with Kamala Harris because conservatives didn’t like it; he said no. What Owens fears most for the country now are apathy and cowardice, he said. “I do think more people need to stand up,” he said. “You either do the right thing and accept the consequences, or you don’t, and then you live with the consequences.” Please see Parting Words for more on this matter.
