Trump Planning Mexico Invasion
Troops are training for a “potential mission” targeting drug cartels in Mexico, NBC News reported yesterday. The mission would send troops and intelligence officers, sources told the outlet, and would involve “ground operations inside Mexico.” Deployment “is not imminent,” the sources said, and “discussions about the scope of the mission are ongoing.” Per NBC: “The US troops, many of whom would be from Joint Special Operations Command, would operate under the authority of the US intelligence community, known as Title 50 status, the two current officials said. They said officers from the Central Intelligence Agency also would participate.”
Invading Mexico would constitute a drastic escalation, or, as NBC put it, “a new front” in Trump’s illegal bombing campaign in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. Already, he has blown up at least 15 boats and murdered at least 65 people, according to the NYT boat bombing tracker. Trump says, without proof, that he is bombing drug runners. But according to The Intercept, the regime has no idea who it’s killing. Last week, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said Trump is violating international law and should be investigated. “These attacks – and their mounting human cost – are unacceptable,” Türk said. “The US must halt such attacks and take all measures necessary to prevent the extrajudicial killing of people aboard these boats.”
Instead, Trump is going to expand his illegal maritime war and hide the details. Per NBC: “If the mission is given the final green light, the administration plans to maintain secrecy around it and not publicize actions associated with it, as it has with recent bombings of suspected drug-smuggling boats, the two current and two former US officials said.”
