Jury Finds Trump Liable for Sexual Abuse, Defamation

A Manhattan jury ordered Trump to pay E. Jean Carroll $5 million for sexual abuse and defamation, the New York Times reports. Carroll said that Trump had raped her 30 years ago in the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan. The jury did not find Trump liable for rape, and it’s unclear how the jury made the sexual abuse and the rape allegations. The jury also declined to rule on a charge of forcible touching.

Trump, who refused to take the stand during the trial, is also on the hook for defamation after calling her case “a complete con job” and “a Hoax” on his twitter clone, Truth Social. The unanimous verdict showed that Trump is liable for $2.02 million for sexual abuse and $2.98 million for defamation. Trump’s lawyer said he would appeal as his client took to Truth Social again to decry “the greatest witch hunt of all time.”

Carroll is only one of twenty-six women who have accused Trump of sexual misconduct, two of whom testified to say Trump had attacked them in a similar manner. Asked by her lawyer whether she was glad she went public with her story:

“I have regretted this about a hundred times, but in the end — in the end, being able to get my day in court finally is everything to me,” she said. “I’m glad that I got to tell my story in court.”

Feinstein Back in the Senate

California Senator Dianne Feinstein arrived in Washington yesterday evening after nearly three months of absence due to a bad case of shingles, according to NYT.  This will likely end the immediate crisis of getting judicial nominees out of committee, and will give the judiciary committee a majority to subpoena Clarence Thomas. Her return also makes the California Senate race less complicated by not elevating one of the candidates prior to the election. Feinstein, 89 and in cognitive decline, has stated her intention of finishing her term, which ends in January 2025. Let’s hope she stays healthy.

Tucker Carlson to Relaunch Show On Twitter

What do you expect from Musk who’s promoting White grievance politics and dabbling in conspiracy theories about the Texas Mall shooter? Carlson, who was fired from Fox News two weeks ago, announced on Twitter that he’d be relaunching his show on Musk’s site, saying it was the only remaining large platform that “allows free speech,” according to FT. Nothing good will come of this.
