Trump Orders Justice Department to Steal Alaska Election
Alaska Democratic senate nominee Mary Peltola and the national Democrats filed a legal motion against the Trump administration Friday night, after Trump ordered the Department of Justice to block the results of the November election from being certified unless incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan wins, Democracy Docket and MSNow reported. Trump’s order is his latest assault on the midterm elections and should not be tolerated even if mainstream media outlets sane-wash it, such as NBC News calling it “a controversial move” and the NYT calling it “highly unusual.” We should call it what it is: an illegal and desperate bid to rig the election and preserve GOP dominance in the Senate because Republicans know they are extremely unpopular and cannot win in a fair fight. At least the NYT also said in a separate story that there is no “obvious legal authority” to preemptively rig an election. Attorneys for Peltola said it better.
“In an unprecedented pre-emptive strike on democratic elections, the Department of Justice—acting on the President’s personal orders—demands that this Court enjoin the certification of the ongoing U.S. Senate election, but only if the President’s preferred candidate loses,” Alaskans for Mary and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee wrote in their legal filing. “Alaskans, apparently, must elect Senator Dan S. Sullivan or the President will not let them elect anyone at all. But the federal government has no power to impose that Hobson’s choice on the people of this State,” they added, using a term that describes a situation that provides only the illusion of choice.
Attorneys for the Department of Justice argued that the reason Trump’s preferred candidate must win is because there are two Dan Sullivans on the ballot. One is the incumbent; the other is Dan J. Sullivan Jr., a former teacher. (There is a third Dan Sullivan who decided it would be smart to jump into the conversation right now: Dan A. Sullivan, the former mayor of Anchorage, who endorsed incumbent Dan S.). All the Dans are Republicans.
An unsettling development in this mess came over the weekend, when Peltola required medical attention after a car crashed into the one transporting her and her family to a campaign stop at the Alaska Federation of Natives annual banquet on Saturday, the Guardian reported. Peltola’s campaign said Sunday that she had suspended some upcoming events to take time to recover. Police said the circumstances of the crash are under investigation.

LULA! Leftist Icon Defeats Bolsonaro, Wins Despite Voter Suppression
Brazil’s leftist president and international icon Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a historic fourth term last night, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro and denying Trump an ally in the authoritarian region, the AP, New York Times, and NBC News reported. Brazil “will not accept being anyone’s backyard,” he told supporters in his victory speech. It is the first time since Brazil returned to democracy in the ‘80s that any candidate has won after finishing second in the first round of voting. As of last night, Bolsonaro refused to concede, saying he would ask the Supreme Court to annul the vote. The response is similar to his criminal father’s reaction to losing against Lula four years ago. Former President Jair Bolsonaro refused to accept defeat and is now serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup. An annulment is unlikely, analysts said, because of the scale of Lula’s victory. He took 51.8 percent of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2 percent, a difference of nearly 4.4 million people.
Lula won in spite of the funny games Bolsonaro’s allies tried to play. Bolsonaro-aligned officials in the Lula stronghold of Salvador, Bahia, blocked at least 75 buses from leaving municipal garages, cutting bus service and making it difficult for people to get to the polls, the Guardian and the Latin Times reported. Trump’s allies also interfered on Bolsonaro’s behalf. According to YAC News, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta suppressed Lula’s Instagram while simultaneously boosting Bolsonaro’s profile and his WhatsApp channel.
How Many More Criminals Has Texas AG Done Business With?
Corrupt Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and his corrupt wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton, gave $600,000 to convicted criminal Scott Sherman, four years after Sherman had completed a federal prison sentence for mortgage fraud, ProPublica and the Texas Tribune reported. Sherman took the money, expanded his network of companies into a “vast enterprise” of businesses – some of which stopped paying their taxes – then delivered kickbacks to the Paxtons. Sherman’s companies “wired the Paxtons tens of thousands of dollars in the months leading up to and during the attorney general’s impeachment on charges of corruption and bribery.” Paxton was acquitted. Now he’s in a tight race with Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico and likes to say he’s tough on crime.
Right-Wing Venezuelan Opposition Leader Returns From Exile
María Corina Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize and then gave it to Trump earlier this year, has returned to Venezuela after nearly a year in exile, the Guardian and the NYT reported yesterday. Corina Machado is the archrival of interim president Delcy Rodríguez; Trump backed Rodríguez to run the country, despite Corina Machado’s gift, after he abducted President Nicolás Maduro in January. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been in Brooklyn’s notoriously disgusting Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal prison known for its inhumane, unsanitary and dangerous conditions and called “hell on earth.”
Trump did not want Machado to return to Venezuela because “her presence would complicate the cosy relationship” he has with Rodríguez. According to the AP, Trump responded on Sunday to questions about her return by feigning ignorance: “I don’t know anything about it, but I think she’s a very nice woman. She gave me her Nobel Prize. So how can I say anything else? And I hope she’s safe. She’s a very nice woman. But we’re doing really well in Venezuela.”
Machado and her supporters are demanding a date for a presidential election, which the US has worked to undermine; Rodríguez has far overstayed the 90 days she was supposed to serve as acting president and has failed to call for an election.
