THE BIG NEWS

Trump Will ‘Probably’ Visit Texas Flood Aftermath Friday, Sidesteps Questions About FEMA Demolition as Death Toll Climbs to 82

Trump ignored his own responsibility even as rescuers in central Texas risked water moccasins and floating debris to search for the dozens of people still missing after deadly floods killed at least 82 Friday and Saturday. Twenty-eight of the dead are children. Trump said he would not consider rehiring the federal meteorologists he and his former co-president Elon Musk fired in their frenzy to crush social services. “I would think not. This was a thing that happened in seconds. Nobody expected it. Nobody saw it. Very talented people there, and they didn’t see it,” Trump said, according to the AP. And he refused to say whether he still wants to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency by December 2025, telling reporters it was an issue “we can talk about later, but right now we are busy working.”

It beggars belief that he really includes himself in the phrase “we are busy working,” given that his schedule for Friday and Saturday was mostly golf, but narcissism is a helluva drug. Trump signed a major disaster declaration but couldn’t be bothered to go to Texas as the recovery was underway, saying he’ll “probably” go on Friday. “We wanted to leave a little time,” he said, according to The Hill. “I would have done it today, but we’d just be in their way. Probably Friday.” As of Sunday night, there were 41 people still unaccounted for across the state, according to the NYT. More could be missing.

Throughout the weekend, officials looked for someone to blame for the floods, which ripped homes off their foundations and crashed through an all-girls summer camp after a storm dropped more than a month’s worth of rain in a matter of hours. Some state and local officials said the National Weather Service failed to provide adequate forecasts. But meteorologists who Wired interviewed said “that the NWS accurately predicted the risk of flooding in Texas and could not have foreseen the extreme severity of the storm. What’s more, they say that what the NWS did forecast this week underscores the need to sustain funding to the crucial agency.” Instead, the real problem may have been communicating that information to people, according to reporting by NBC affiliate KXAN. The outlet said that after the NWS issued a flash flood warning at 1:14 a.m., it took hours for the city and county’s Facebook pages to post that information. “City and county officials have yet to fully explain the timing of those posts or other ways they might have notified people near the water,” KXAN reported. So far, officials have blamed everyone else for the lack of a flood warning system, saying they looked into it but “the public reeled at the cost.”

New Proposal Outlines 60-day Ceasefire in Gaza

Hamas gave a “positive” response to the latest proposal late Friday, the AP reported. Per the AP: “The document outlines plans for a 60-day ceasefire during which Hamas would hand over 10 living and 18 dead hostages, Israeli forces would withdraw to a buffer zone along Gaza’s borders with Israel and Egypt, and significant amounts of aid would be brought in. The document says the aid would be distributed by United Nations agencies and the Palestinian Red Crescent. It does not specify what would happen to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the American organization that has distributed food aid since May. Israel wants it to replace the U.N.-coordinated system.” The proposal does not guarantee a permanent end to the war, which Hamas has demanded, instead saying negotiations for a permanent ceasefire would be held during the 60 days.

Madre Fire Engulfs 80,000 Acres, Threatens Carrizo Plain National Monument

The fire that started Wednesday was already the largest in California so far this year and grew slightly yesterday, threatening endangered wildlife and plants in the Carrizo Plain National Monument, officials told the LA Times. Nearly 1,400 firefighters were on the scene and had gained control of 30 percent of the fire, up from 10 percent the day before, a spokesman said.

  • Are The Hefty Tariffs Returning Aug. 1? Or July 9? Anyone? Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that on Aug. 1, the US will impose its extreme tariffs on countries that haven’t negotiated a trade deal with Trump. The administration said earlier that the date would be this Wednesday, July 9. “It’s not a new deadline,” Bessent said. “We are saying this is when it’s happening.” The White House didn’t clarify. via NBC News

Greg Abbott signed into law the Anti-Red Flag Act, “which preemptively bans the creation or enforcement of extreme risk protective orders. That’s at least how many chapters of the Old Glory Club are active in the United States, according to an investigation by The Guardian. The far-right, men-only club pushes fascist ideas about Jewish people and immigrants via conferences, meetups, events, and prominent figures like podcaster Pete Quinones, and is “another major new network of racists, too many of which are springing up in the era of Trump,” said Heidi Beirich, co-founder and chief strategy officer of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. “The fact that OGC members apparently include current and former military members and police officers, and similar government officials, is a particular cause for alarm, and frankly shocking.”

PARTING WORDS

“[E]very single day people are getting killed when they go to pick up food from GHF sites. But hunger is a little bit of an addiction. Once it's controlling your own mind, you cannot think straight. Once you feel that your stomach, your brain, your body, are craving something, you will not be afraid of anything. You will do anything to get food.

– Anas Baba, NPR producer in the Gaza Strip, who described his experience trying to get food at a distribution site controlled by shady US-Israeli organization Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which Israeli forces use as shooting galleries. As of yesterday afternoon Eastern time, Israeli forces had killed 80 Palestinians over the previous 24 hours and wounded 304 more.
