THE BIG NEWS

Trump Defiant After Assassination Attempt

You may have already heard about this one. On Saturday, at a campaign rally in Butler, PA, former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt as a shooter on a nearby rooftop fired off a handful of shots, clipping Trump's ear and killing one attendee. The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Bethel Park resident Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed at the scene. His motive remains unknown. Former classmates described him as an outcast with a conservative bent.

Journalists are examining the event from every angle – Secret Service failures; the political impotence of Democrats; the building where the would-be assassin was apparently allowed to line up his shot unmolested, despite bystanders pointing him out to police; reactions from Trump's sycophantic VP wannabes; the shooter's background; and the grimly iconic photo of a bloodied Trump raising his fist. It's a lot to take in.

Less than 24 hours after the event, professional Democrats were despondent at the prospect of an almost-martyred Trump cruising to a second term. One brave anonymous consultant told NBC News that "the presidential contest ended last night." An anonymous House Democrat told Axios, "We've all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency."

"We cannot, we must not go down this road in America," said President Biden in an Oval Office speech, who's in the awkward position of trying to soften his political rhetoric toward a man he once said threatened the country's democracy. "We've traveled it before throughout our history. Violence has never been the answer."

As for Trump, he seems to be doing better than ever. "He's in the saddle," said a Fox News host who spoke to Trump. "He's excited." Other Trump allies offered similar reassurances. The former president was reportedly resting at his golf club in Bedminster, NJ. He still plans to speak at this week's Republican National Convention.

Israel Kills Scores of People in Failed Strike on Hamas Commander

The same day that American politicians said that political violence was unacceptable, an Israeli air strike in the supposed "safe zone" in Gaza killed at least 90 people. The purported target was Mohammed Deif, the Hamas military commander who's survived a number of previous assassination attempts. Hamas claimed that Deif survived the attack. Israel said that the strike killed one of Deif's lieutenants.

Survivors and medical workers described a horrific scene of chaos, death, and gore. The attack was supposedly the product of intensive surveillance. It also used US-supplied bombs. In a follow-up strike, Israeli forces appeared to target first responders.

That's about how many AT&T customer records were exposed as part of a major cybersecurity breach. The data includes call records and texts – metadata, not content – from practically every American who pays AT&T for phone or cell service. The records are mostly from a five-month period in 2022. Possibly the work of a state actor, the breach is one of the largest in telecommunications history. According to a follow-up report in Wired, AT&T paid one of the hackers $300,000 to delete the data.
