THE BIG NEWS
Trump Bombs Second Venezuelan Boat, Kills Three
Trump ordered the military to bomb a second Venezuelan boat yesterday, killing three people he claimed were terrorists transporting drugs, ABC News, The Guardian, The NYT and The Washington Post reported. “The strike occurred while these confirmed narco-terroists from Venezuela were in International Waters transporting illegal narcotics (A DEADLY WEAPON POISONING AMERICANS!) headed to the US,” Trump wrote on his social media website.
The bombing came shortly after Trump blew up another Venezuelan boat even though it had already turned around, hitting it “repeatedly” as it fled and killing 11 people on board. Trump claimed the people were “heading to the United States” and part of the gang Tren de Aragua; a former military official said it’s more likely the boat was full of migrant workers.
It also comes as the US continues to build up its firepower around Venezuela. Five F-35 fighter jets arrived in Puerto Rico this weekend, joining about half a dozen US Navy destroyers already there. Congress has not approved a war on Venezuela, but illegality hasn’t stopped Trump before.
On Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said that the first attack violated US and international laws and was a “heinous crime.” Trump is trying to provoke him into a “major war,” with the goal of “regime change for oil,” Maduro added. Shortly after those statements, Trump gloated on social media about the second strike.
