Trump Admin Sides With Russia Against Ukraine In UN Vote

At the United Nations yesterday, on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United States voted against a resolution that denounced Russian aggression and demanded a return of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. The US abstained on another resolution, ostensibly because European allies had inserted "new anti-Russian language." With these votes, the US aligned itself with Russia and a handful of its allies, like Iran and North Korea.

The votes emphasize the enormous rift developing between the United States and its erstwhile European allies on Ukraine. In just the last week, Trump has called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a "dictator" who needs to work harder to end the war that he didn't start – or else.

In Kyiv, European leaders met to mark the war's third anniversary. Western liberal politicians like EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lamented the impunity with which autocrats can act to violate neighbors' borders and undermine national sovereignty. "All of us rely on those rules to be able to build peace and security," said Trudeau.

Bragging that he had had "some very good talks with Russia," Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday. The two had a chummy meeting punctuated by some awkward, vigorous handshakes, while Macron proposed that any peace agreement "must not mean a surrender of Ukraine" and must guarantee Ukrainian sovereignty.

Measles Is Back In The US Twenty-five years after the US officially eradicated measles, it's back, with 99 cases reported in Texas and New Mexico. The disease mostly affects children and can be deadly. Its resurgence has been attributed to growing anti-vax sentiment. via WaPo.
Israel Is Ethnically Cleansing The West Bank Israel has sent tanks into the West Bank "for the first time in decades" as it continues to prosecute a violent and physically destructive crackdown that has driven 40,000 Palestinians from refugee camps. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that he did not want the displaced Palestinians to return and that he intends for his soldiers to stay there for a year. Israel has arrested hundreds of people in its current operation. via WaPo and Al Jazeera.

Some estimates were several times higher. While Israel and Hezbollah nominally have a ceasefire, Israel still occupies part of southern Lebanon and Israeli fighter jets flew over the funeral procession in a show of force.
