THE BIG NEWS

More Progress on Ceasefire and Hostages in Gaza

On Monday, Hamas released a fifth group of hostages, twelve people who had been held since the militant group's attack on Israeli communities on October 7. Israel, in turn, released 30 Palestinian prisoners, half of whom were children. The five-day-old ceasefire was also extended for two more days, according to US National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby. Israel has pledged to eventually resume its military campaign in Gaza, but US officials are increasingly alarmed by the catastrophic destruction and loss of life that have already been inflicted by the IDF. In the immediate term, both sides are expected to continue releasing prisoners, including, potentially, Israeli soldiers held by Hamas. The Qatari government, which is serving as mediator, has said that for now women and children are the priority.

Georgia Prosecutors Won't Offer Plea Deals to Top Election Conspirators

Fulton County prosecutors don't plan to offer plea deals to former President Donald Trump, his chief of staff Mark Meadows, or Rudy Giuliani, according to The Guardian. Trump has 18 co-defendants in the Georgia RICO case, and some of them, like Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, and Kenneth Chesebro, already reached plea deals with prosecutors and offered incriminating statements. As is typical in RICO cases, the prosecution seems intent on turning lower-level conspirators against Trump and his top advisors. It might be working. In a recent court filing, John Eastman, another Trump co-defendant, asked to move the legal proceedings along more quickly, hoping that "defendants who do not have lifetime United States Secret Service protection and who are not running for election to an office can exercise and have their right to a jury trial completed within 2024."

That's how many years it took Elon Musk to apparently discover Pizzagate, the ridiculous proto-QAnon conspiracy theory that claimed Democratic politicos were running a child sex abuse ring in the basement of D.C. pizza parlor. Yesterday, Musk tweeted that a journalist who had been investigating Pizzagate was arrested for possessing child porn. While the journalist was arrested (and pleaded guilty in July), he had not reported on Pizzagate. Musk later deleted the tweet, which was viewed 15 million times.

PARTING WORDS

“President Trump did not take an oath 'to support the Constitution of the United States'”

-- From a legal filing submitted by former President Donald Trump's team in Colorado, in response to a lawsuit seeking to keep the accused coup-plotter off the 2024 ballot. Trump, of course, took an oath that he would "faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Not quite "support" but close enough, perhaps, for the Colorado State Supreme Court.
