Striking Starbucks and Amazon Workers Fight Back Against Oligarchy

Let's bracket for a moment the many horrors plaguing our world and the kleptocratic rule-by-idiots set to begin next January, and let's express some joy, solidarity, and righteous anger on behalf of the baristas, delivery drivers, and warehouse workers who are striking this holiday season. As we've been tracking this week, Starbucks is currently facing the largest strike in its history, affecting more than 300 stores. Some Starbucks workers ended their strike yesterday, but more walkouts seem likely in the new year.

Meanwhile, at Amazon, the Teamsters are leading a strike that's motivated in part by a documented rise in workplace injuries. As a recent Senate report found, those workplace injuries are the result of a policy choice by Amazon management to privilege speed and production over worker safety.

"If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed," said Teamsters President Sean O'Brien. "We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it."

That's the kind of labor militancy that Kamala Harris could've learned from – and used politically – but apparently she skipped out early on her meeting with O'Brien.

Trump, Pissed About Biden's Commutations, Vows to Kill Again

In response to President Joe Biden commuting the death sentences of 37 federal prisoners, President-elect Donald Trump promised that the executions would resume under his new administration. Trump aired his murderous discontent on Truth Social:

"Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country. When you hear the acts of each, you won’t believe that he did this. Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can’t believe this is happening!"

In another post, Trump said he would tell law enforcement to "vigorously pursue the death penalty" and vowed that human traffickers would be killed.

Syrian Rebel Groups Disband To Join New Government

A number of Syrian rebel groups met this week and agreed to dissolve in order to work together under the new post-revolutionary government's ministry of defense. Ahmed al-Sharaa, former commander of leading rebel group HTS, is attempting to consolidate power among the country's various armed factions. The Syrian Democratic Forces, a US-backed Kurdish group, did not participate in the agreement. They've been busy fighting the Turkish-sponsored Syrian National Army in the country's north.

  • Famine In Sudan Is Getting Worse A UN-sponsored organization documenting the growing famine in Sudan said that it has now spread to five regions in the country. Half of Sudan's population is short of food. The country is experiencing a devastating civil war between a vicious militia group called the RSF and an equally repressive military junta, with the usual outside powers pouring in weapons and mercenaries. via Al Jazeera.
  • Investigators Uncover Dozens of Mass Graves in Syria Post-revolutionary Syrian officials, international war crimes investigators, civil defense workers, and local Syrian activists have been uncovering more heinous crimes by the regime of the fallen dictator Bashar al-Assad. According to the International Commission on Missing Persons, there may be 66 mass grave sites across the country. via WaPo.
