UHC CEO Shooter's Manifesto: "These Parasites Simply Had It Coming"

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will contest extradition to New York, according to his lawyer. In the meantime, we're learning more about his history and what may have motivated him. Police found on Mangione a short handwritten manifesto, which media outlets have quoted from but have refused to publish in full. The independent journalist Ken Klippenstein published the document – a long paragraph, really – on his Substack. It reads, in part:

"Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy? No the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allwed them to get away with it."

Mangione suffered from debilitating back pain, which seemed to have gotten better after a spinal fusion surgery. His Goodreads account listed a number of books about back pain and the corruption of the healthcare system. He had reportedly been out of touch in recent months with his family, who was looking for him. Friends of Mangione also wrote posts indicating that he had suddenly dropped off the map.

In addition to a murder charge in New York, Mangione faces charges in Pennsylvania related to his possession of a 3D-printed gun and fake IDs.

Guided By Trump, Senate Republicans Block Bill To Protect Journalists

Republicans in the Senate blocked an attempt to pass a previously bipartisan bill known as the PRESS Act, which was supposed to provide journalists protection from government surveillance and coercion. The bill is seen as a potentially important hedge against President-elect Donald Trump's promise to imprison journalists and leakers. The PRESS Act passed unanimously in the Republican-led House earlier this year, but that was before Trump posted on Truth Social: "REPUBLICANS MUST KILL THIS BILL!" Now he's getting what he wants.

NYC Is Booting Out Migrants From Shelters

New York City officials said they will shut down 25 migrant shelters over the next four months. One of the shelters – on federally owned land at the old Floyd Bennett Field – will close next month, before Donald Trump is sworn in as president. Apparently, New York City officials thought that, with the shelter being on federal property, Trump might be able to cancel the city's lease. It seems that the city, led by cartoonishly corrupt anti-migrant mayor Eric Adams, did Trump's work for him.

  • Trump Picks A Business-Friendly FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, a Republican sitting on the Federal Trade Commission, will be the agency's new chair under President Donald Trump. In a leaked memo, Ferguson vowed to use the position to "reverse Lina Khan's anti-business agenda," "fight wokeness," and use antitrust laws to go after big tech monopolies (hey that's Lina Khan's thing). via Reuters and X/Ben Brody.
  • Ancient Demon Lord Mitch McConnell Fell Down Again Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who has been visibly unwell in recent years, took a tumble in the Capitol yesterday, sustaining a sprained wrist and cuts on his face. McConnell has fallen a number of times in the last year but plans to remain in the Senate until his term ends in January 2027. via CNN.
