Senate Votes to Kick 17 Million Americans Off Insurance as Trump Visits Florida Concentration Camp
Senators yesterday narrowly passed Trump’s deadly spending bill that a new estimate shows would result in at least 17 million Americans losing their health insurance coverage, according to The Washington Post. The Senate version, if enacted, would slash $1.1 trillion of federal spending for Medicaid, Medicare and the ACA marketplaces, with Medicaid making up more than $1 trillion of that amount. It would be the deepest cut to Medicaid in the program’s nearly 60 years and constitute “the biggest reduction in federal funding for the social safety net since at least the 1990s.” The bill now goes to the House.
The bill “will move us as a nation back to the same percentage of uninsured before Obamacare,” Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark R. Warner said. “And it’s not like these people are not going to get sick. They’re going to show up to the emergency room. Rural hospitals are going to be shut down.”
Trump promised he wouldn’t make cuts to Medicaid and keeps repeating that the bill only eliminates “waste, fraud and abuse.” Everyone should understand that’s a lie. If they don’t, well, maybe they will if the legislation forces them off insurance or shutters their closest hospital. But maybe not. Brainwashing takes time to undo. In any event, Trump spent the day in Florida with his confederates, visiting a hastily built concentration camp on an abandoned airstrip in the fragile Everglades. As protesters gathered outside, Trump wandered around looking at bunk beds packed together just like they were at Auschwitz and listened to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem describe what goes on in her head. Per the NYT:
Ms. Noem told a story about a recent detainee. “The other day, I was talking to some marshals that have been partnering with ICE,” she said. “They said that they had detained a cannibal and put him on a plane to take him home, and while they had him in his seat, he started to eat himself and they had to get him off and get him medical attention.” (The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to questions seeking clarity about the episode Ms. Noem described on Tuesday).
“These are the kind of deranged individuals that are on our streets in America,” she said.

10,000 Workers Strike in Philadelphia
Thousands of workers who collect garbage, answer 911 calls and maintain city swimming pools went on strike Tuesday after the city failed to bargain a fair contract, the AP and The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The allegedly pro-labor Democratic Mayor, Cherelle Parker, suspended trash collection, an echo of the strike the union went on for 20 days in the summer of 1986, causing 45,000 tons of “stinking, maggot-laced garbage” to pile up at neighborhood disposal sites. Sounds like important workers the city should pay! Parker also begged people not to leave the city for the long holiday weekend. District Council 33 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees called the strike early Tuesday morning after bargaining broke down. Members of DC 33 are the lowest-paid among Philadelphia’s four major municipal unions, drawing an average annual salary of just $46,000 in a city that costs more than 3 percent above the national average and requires single people make at least $60,000 to live comfortably, according to one analysis. DC 33 is also the only union among Philly’s “big four” in which most members are Black.
The union’s initial contract proposal asked for 8 percent annual raises each year of the three-year contract and cost-of-living increases, and bonuses of up to $5,000 for those who worked through the pandemic. The union also proposed that the city pay the full cost of employee health care, about $1,700 per person per month. That would help workers avoid having to take on a second job to make ends meet, which some have to do, such as 55-year-old Tanya Ray, a water department meter shop support clerk who has been a city worker and DC 33 member for over a decade. She told the Inquirer she needs the additional work “to live comfortably. I am done living paycheck to paycheck.”
US Tech Firms Tell UK Ministers To Implant Trackers Under Offenders’ Skin
Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Palantir and dozens of other companies pitched a host of dystopian ideas to UK ministers at a meeting last month, according to The Guardian. Ministers at the meeting, chaired by Justice Secretary and Labour Party member Shabana Mahmood, asked for “ideas for using wearable technologies, behaviour monitoring and geolocation to create a ‘prison outside of prison.’” Responses included: “Real-time behaviour monitoring and subcutaneous tracking,” “behaviour management” of people in the criminal justice system; “artificial intelligence advisers to support offenders’ rehabilitation,” and robots to “manage prisoner movement and containment.”
