THE BIG NEWS
Rep. Eric Swalwell is a Rapist: Staff
Multiple women who worked for Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell came forward to report that he had raped or sexually assaulted them, including one who said he left her bruised and bloody, according to CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle. She described a pattern of drinking alcohol with Swalwell, blacking out, and waking up feeling “the effect of vaginal intercourse.”
In one instance, she recalled pushing Swalwell away and telling him no before he raped her. “My vagina was bleeding the next day after the sex, I had cuts and bruises on my body,” she told CNN, adding, “I could see the bruises of where his hand had been on my rib cage and on my legs and near my thighs.”
Swalwell also sent women unsolicited nude photos, videos of his penis, and other explicit messages. Per CNN:
The women described a similar pattern of events: Swalwell, who is married and has three children, showed close interest in their lives when they were in their twenties and finding their footing professionally, making them feel special and even starstruck. Then, they said, he would send them increasingly sexual messages. Many said they reciprocated and engaged with him in part because of his position of power. In some cases, those inappropriate exchanges escalated to alleged unwanted physical touch or sexual assault, often tied to episodes of heavy drinking.
Swalwell says none of it is true and sent cease-and-desist letters to at least two women, threatening them with legal action. Women who spoke with news outlets last week initially stayed quiet because they feared Swalwell would hurt their careers and because “they had assumed they were alone in their experiences.” Not anymore: an attorney for the woman accusing him of rape said that her “statements are 100% factually accurate, and she will not be withdrawing them.”
Swalwell immediately lost support for his run for governor of California in a crowded race and on Sunday night said he was suspending his campaign, though he continued to deny the claims. According to the NYT, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told him to drop out; multiple other lawmakers and organizations pulled their endorsements, including Sens. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), the California Teachers Association and the Service Employees International Union California.

DHS Deports American Citizen to Mexico, ICE Prisons Still Horrific
The US government’s ethnic cleansing campaign is continuing to ruin lives and tear apart families and communities, though other stories have occupied news outlets, which don’t have enough reporters to cover everything anymore. In one recent nightmare of an example, the Department of Homeland Security deported US Citizen Brian Morales to Mexico on April 7, The Independent reported. Agents stopped Morales, a 25-year-old man born in Denver, refused to look at his proof of citizenship and threatened him with five years in prison for fraud. Morales was “so afraid of prison time, and of being unable to see his daughter, that he signed voluntary removal papers and told the officers ‘what they wanted to hear.’” Officers wouldn’t say where in Mexico they were sending him, “and when he arrived, he realized it was a place he had never been to before.” The US government is also continuing to torment people by trapping them in concentration camps at home, the AZ Mirror and the Orlando Sentinel reported. At the Florida ICE prison known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” the government is cramming people into cages, giving them little food and water, and forcing them to live in filthy conditions where human waste is scattered around the floor. An inspection of the Mesa immigration prison in Arizona found the same, with too many people crammed into cement boxes, many of whom “scrambled to the doors of the holding cells,” when they saw lawmakers arrive and begged them for help.
Everything Costs More Because of Trump
It didn’t have to be this way, but the US is governed by a far-right, mentally failing lunatic and lacks a functioning opposition party, so this is what we’re doing. On top of all the unnecessary death and suffering Trump’s war is visiting on Iran and US service members, it’s also squeezing Americans financially as they try to stay afloat in the ongoing affordability crisis. His war has pushed inflation to its highest rate in two years, 3.3 percent as of last month, according to NBC News. The price of gas is up 21.2 percent, the largest one-month price hike since 1967. Company executives are dealing with that by increasing the prices of stuff they sell so they can maintain their profit margins – “passing the cost on to consumers,” as some in business circles say. I prefer to call it “price gouging” or “profiteering.” In any event, the important thing to know is that prices are higher because executives raised them to deal with an unnecessary war. Anyway, Per NBC:
Companies from Amazon to airlines have announced fuel surcharges to deal with the soaring costs, and many of those fees are unlikely to revert to pre-war levels. The full economic impact of the conflict has still likely yet to be felt as global markets continue to grapple with shortages of key commodities out of the Middle East.
“We have to understand that it will take months for the higher energy prices, along with plastics, packaging, etc… to flow into the core rate,” Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at One Point BFG Wealth Partners financial group and author of a widely read financial report, said in a note Friday.
But households are already feeling the bite. With average hourly earnings increasing just 0.2% on the month, inflation-adjusted pay fell 0.6% in March, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday in a separate report. Consumer outlook fell to a record low in early April, according to the University of Michigan Survey of Consumer Expectations.
“Inflation is almost eating up the entirety of Americans’ wage gains already,” Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said in a note. “It will almost certainly mean inflation is above wages by April or May. That is painful. That means many Americans truly are under pressure financially and having to make tough decisions about what to buy and what to skip.”

SOME NUMBER
200 feet
That’s how close you need to get to the Oval Office to get a presidential pardon, according to the Wall Street Journal, which reported that Trump said “I’ll pardon everyone who has come within 200 feet of the Oval,” a significant increase from the 10 feet he said earlier this year was the get-out-of-jail-free zone. Given that the entire administration is packed with crooks, that’s a lot of pardons. Good thing he dropped the autopen investigation – he’s gonna need it.

PARTING WORDS
“These games are one on one; there’s no house. This is me against you. It’s a fair game, everybody’s got an equal opportunity, equal conditions, and it was used as a form of exchange … particularly between groups of people who did not come into frequent contact with each other.”
– Robert Madden, author of a new study showing that Indigenous North Americans were making dice for games and gambling more than 12,000 years ago, 6,000 years before anybody else. “Historians have traditionally treated dice and probability as old world innovations,” he told The Guardian. “What the archaeological record shows is that ancient Native American groups were deliberately making objects designed to produce random outcomes and using those outcomes in structured games thousands of years earlier than previously recognised.” If MAGA really wants to return to tradition, they should drop Polymarket and just play dice. But in any case, games! From way back! Fun.
