THE BIG NEWS
Regime Covers Up ICE Execution, Plans More Secret Police in Minnesota
Minnesota is launching its own investigation into Jonathan Ross, the federal agent who executed Renee Good with three shots to the face at point-blank range, because the government is trying to cover up what happened. Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, its lead investigative department, was initially investigating alongside the FBI, according to The Guardian, PBS and The Washington Post. But then the FBI completely took over and barred BCA from accessing “case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews,” all of which is crucial information, said Minnesota’s Hennepin County attorney. “They collected the car and took it wherever the BCA does not have access to the car. And the problem isn’t that the FBI took the car, it’s that the BCA doesn’t have access to the car, or right now, even access to the forensic evaluation that happens as a result of the investigation with that car,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said.
In a press conference on Friday, Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey said it was “garbage” that the regime is casting Good as the villain and urged the state to carry on with its own probe. “This is a time to follow the law,” he said. “This is not a time to hide from the facts. This is a time to embrace them, making sure that we’re pushing for transparency every step of the way.” Moriarty is calling on members of the public to share videos and other evidence about the execution.
Thousands of protesters rallied this weekend at more than 1,000 “Ice Out For Good” events across the country and voiced their fury at the regime’s execution and coverup, NPR and the NYT reported, including in Boston, Houston, Omaha, Seattle, New York, and Portland, Oregon – where ICE shot two more people shortly after Ross murdered Good. In Minnesota, thousands turned out to protest ICE and the Trump regime’s siege of their state. Homeland Securiti Secretari Kristi Noem said Sunday that she would send “hundreds more” federal agents to Minneapolis and repeated lies that Good was responsible for her own execution.

Trump Attempts to Spin Worst Jobs Year Since Height of Covid, Promises Affordability Measures
2025 was the worst year for hiring since 2020, adding just 584,000 jobs, according to federal data released last week, NBC News reported. Employers added more than 2 million jobs each year in 2023 and 2024. Trump attempted to spin the terrible numbers by posting them on social media and calling them “amazing,” the AP reported, but it’s going to take more than that to trick people out of believing what they can see with their own eyes. As Navy Federal Credit Union’s chief economist told CNN: “The United States is in a jobless boom,” adding, “There was almost no hiring in 2025 … we would be talking about job losses in 2025, if it weren’t for health care and social assistance.”
Trump rolled out new talking points last week to make it seem like he cares about the joblessness and affordability crisis – tacit acknowledgement that the economy is terrible, though his regime keeps insisting otherwise. Trump said last Wednesday that he would “immediately take steps” to stop big institutional investors like Blackstone from buying more single-family homes, which is a major driver of skyrocketing housing costs. Trump claimed he would talk about it more in his upcoming speech at Davos, but we’ll see if he remembers by then. According to the WSJ, the statement blindsided his Wall Street buddies, who will no doubt fight like hell to prevent a ban. Trump also said Friday that he would temporarily cap credit card interest rates at 10 percent starting next Tuesday. It’s not clear what authority he has to do that, Politico noted. The average rate credit card companies charge on balances is more than 22 percent. “We will no longer let the American Public be ‘ripped off’ by Credit Card Companies that are charging interest rates of 20 to 30% … AFFORDABILITY!” he wrote on the social media website he owns. Wall Street executives didn’t like that, either, according to The Washington Post. Executives responded by scaremongering about how capping interest rates would “be devastating for millions of American families and small business owners,” which is what financial interests always say when anyone suggests new regulations.
BRICS Nations Hold War Games in South Africa
Just a few months ago, China, India and Russia got together to plan a world without the US, as AMQ reported, a show of solidarity between the coalition of countries known as BRICS. Now China, Russia and Iran are holding joint naval exercises in South Africa, according to Reuters, in what China is calling a “BRICS Plus” operation to “ensure the safety of shipping and maritime economic activities. In addition to the five original BRICS members – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – BRICS Plus includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
“Exercise WILL FOR PEACE 2026 brings together navies from BRICS Plus countries for ... joint maritime safety operations (and) interoperability drills,” the South African military stated. The week-long war games started Saturday and will involve drills with ships the participating nations brought: destroyers from China and Iran, corvettes from Russia and the United Arab Emirates and a mid-sized frigate from South Africa. Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia and Ethiopia are joining the drills as observers. South African officials said all coalition members were invited; India opted out, Al Jazeera reported, because it didn’t want to anger the Trump administration.

- Funds Must Flow for Child Care Subsidies A judge ruled Friday that Trump can’t cut off money for child care subsidies and other programs for families in need in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and New York, which he wanted to do because he had “reason to believe” the states are illegally helping undocumented people, though he produced no evidence to show that is the case. via the AP.
- Fourth Baby in Gaza Freezes to Death as Israel Expands Genocide Two-month-old Mohammed Abu Harbid is the latest infant to die from severe hypothermia since November; a new neonatal ward can’t keep babies alive because Israel has banned the internal batteries that run neonatal incubators, so they go cold when the generator repeatedly fails. Meanwhile, Israel continued its genocide throughout Palestine, including by raiding a Palestinian wedding in Jerusalem, shooting live rounds and stun grenades at attendants, and arresting the groom. via Al Jazeera.

- Washington National Opera Leaving Kennedy Center ASAP The storied opera company, which has performed there since 1971, faced “cancellations by artists, empty seats and the retrenchment of donors” since Trump seized the landmark and glued his name to the building. It is not clear what will happen to the company’s $30 million endowment. via the NYT.

That’s how long the regime has kept Palestinian activist Leqaa Kordia in prison after she accidentally overstayed her student visa and participated in protests against Israel’s genocide. Kordia is in Prairieland Detention Center in North Texas and is the last of the Columbia University protesters to still be in prison, even though a judge has twice ordered her release. “If deported, Kordia will be turned over to the Israeli government, which has killed almost 200 members of her family during the genocide in Gaza,” Mondoweiss reported.

“I’m not mad at you.”
