Protesters Shut Down Streets Across Globe To March Against Trump

Protesters at Saturday’s Hands Off! rally in New York had harrowing stories about how Trump and Musk’s funding cuts have hurt them. One federal worker said their termination email was so upsetting it made them puke – a level of anxiety and stress rivaled only by the time they got divorced. Another said he felt “lost” after getting fired from Veterans Affairs. He’s reinstated now but doesn’t think that will last long. 

A third said that when he was illegally fired from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in February, all he felt was “anger, visceral anger,” not just over losing his job, but because he wouldn’t be able to keep defending people from scams. Christopher Fasano, a member of the CFPB union, was reinstated a month later. But he still can’t log back into the bureau’s systems. 

Protesters in every state and throughout the world gave voice to their anger, fear and distress on Saturday, flooding streets and giving reporters a piece of their minds. More than 150 labor unions, civil rights groups and other activists organized at least 1,200 demonstrations. Half a million people had signed up to attend as of Friday, a Hands Off! spokesperson said. But “millions” turned out. In New York, the crowd packed 5th Avenue for nearly 20 blocks. Fasano’s union estimated that 120,000 people were there. 

Marchers who spoke to AMQ in New York reflected on the common criticism that protests can’t change anything – a remark seen on social media throughout the weekend. 

“I really do disagree with that. Demonstrations have a lot of different functions,” said Laura Chipley, a multimedia artist whose National Endowment for the Humanities grant was unexpectedly cancelled because of federal cuts, wrecking years of work. 

“I’ve been extra demoralized this week, and [the protest] was heartening to me - and it was for others as well - and that’s incredibly important,” Chipley said. “A lot of the power of an administration like this is to make people feel alone and depressed and so worried about making ends meet that they don’t act. It’s really hard to effectively act from a place of being utterly demoralized.”

And protests also stoke a sense of courage, which marchers take with them into the following days. “They can take that experience to the workplace and organize,” Fasano said. “That’s what we have on our side. We don’t have billionaires. What we have on our side is a mass of people, and we’re in the majority. That’s what will turn the tide.”

Second Child Dies of Measles; Chief Medical Neglecter Attends Funeral

An 8-year-old Texas girl died from measles last week, state officials said yesterday, the second child to die in the outbreak. Both children were unvaccinated. There are now over 600 measles cases across the country, more than double the number for all of last year. Besides Texas, other major outbreaks are in Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, and New Mexico – where one person died after contracting measles, though officials have not designated it as the cause of death.

Health and Human Services Secretary and anti-vaccine deathmonger Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. attended the girl’s funeral on Sunday and posted an infuriating message on social media. This reckless prick, who wanted us to believe that dying from measles is normal and recommended toxic “cures,” now wants us to know that he knows that the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine is a lifesaver. 

“The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine,” he wrote, trying and failing to wash blood from his hands.  

Federal Judge To Trump: Bring Wrongly Deported Man Home Today

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis castigated the Trump administration yesterday for failing to lift a finger to bring home Maryland father Kilmar Armando Abrego García, who officials deported to a mega-prison in El Salvador based on nothing. Xinis on Friday ordered Trump to arrange García’s release by 11:59 p.m. today, and the Injustice Department said it couldn’t because doing so would hurt U.S. foreign policy. The Trump administration on Saturday appealed to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and asked that court for an emergency stay on Xinis’s order. As of Sunday night, the appeals court had not acted on the request or said when it would. “This is not about Defendants’ inability to return Abrego García, but their lack of desire,” Xinis wrote. Abrego García is a Salvadoran national and among the hundreds of people the US has disappeared to the notorious prison in El Salvador. 60 Minutes said yesterday it could find no criminal records for 75% of the Venezuelans stuck in that gulag.
