THE BIG NEWS

Ahead of His First Debate With Harris, Trump Promises Once Again to Arrest His Political Opponents

Over the weekend, Donald Trump once more expressed his intention to imprison his political enemies. "WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again," Trump wrote on Truth Social. As if his point were not yet obvious, the Republican presidential nominee added, "Please beware that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country."

These kinds of outbursts – both online and at rallies – have become staples of Trump's crazed repertoire. Last week, he told the Fraternal Order of Police that officers should monitor poll sites for voter fraud because everyday people are "afraid of that badge." Even staid Beltway publications like Axios have taken to reporting the obvious truth of what's in front of them, writing over the weekend: "Trump's public appearances have grown more erratic and incendiary."

Just a bit.

Trump continues to attract criticism from state election officials, including Republicans, who say that his unhinged rants about stolen elections put them in danger. Civic watchdog groups have warned that Trump's attempts to undermine the electoral process risk empowering rogue election officials who would break the law to help him win.

Despite all this, somehow, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are almost even with prospective American voters, according to a new Times/Siena poll. The poll found Trump leading 48-47, or within the margin of error. The Times' average of swing state polls finds Harris ahead in three battleground states and tied in four others. It is all exceedingly, painfully close.

Expect Trump to be his usual crazed Caligula at tomorrow's debate in Philadelphia. As for Harris, the minimum expectation is set at "don't appear dead" – which she should be able to clear – and rises from there.

Georgia School Shooter's Dad Arraigned on Charges

Colin Gray, the father of a 14-year-old who murdered four people in a shooting at a Georgia high school, appeared in court after being arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, and cruelty to children in the second degree. Collectively, the charges could send Gray to prison for the rest of his life. His son, Colt Gray, surrendered to school security and is being charged as an adult.

Last year, law enforcement interviewed both Colin Gray and his son in connection with the younger Gray's alleged threat to shoot up a school. After the encounter, Colin Gray went on to buy his son an assault rifle, which was then used in the shooting. Charging parents of school shooters is relatively new. Earlier this year, two parents in Michigan were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for letting their 15-year-old son have access to guns, despite warnings about his mental health and murderous intentions. Their son later shot dead four people at his high school.

The Feds Are Investigating So Many of Eric Adams' People

Besides Donald Trump, New York City Mayor Eric Adams may be America's most investigated politician. Last week, FBI agents seized the phones of "Adams' police commissioner, his schools chancellor, two deputy mayors and several other advisers," according to NBC New York. Last year, federal investigators took the mayor's phones and tablet. A number of his advisors and appointees have had their homes served with search warrants. Six people were charged in a straw donor scheme last year, and several pleaded guilty.

The ongoing investigations concern possible payments from the government of Turkey and other undisclosed corruption. The FBI, IRS, and the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York are involved. Gothamist counted five grand juries looking into the mayor's administration. Adams hasn't yet been charged, but his rivals are seizing on the stench of corruption wafting out of city hall.

SOME NUMBER

2 years

That's how long it'll be before SpaceX will launch an uncrewed mission to Mars, according to incorrigible fabulist Elon Musk. "Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years," added Musk, who 10 years ago said that he would have landed someone on Mars by now. But Musk excels at absurd promises – fleets of autopilot Tesla taxis, vast underground tunnel systems to somehow bypass traffic – that never come to fruition. Salesmanship might be his only genuine skill.

PARTING WORDS

"Aysenur was more than 200 meters away from where the Israeli soldiers were, and there were no confrontations there at all in the minutes before she was shot. Regardless, from such distance, neither she, nor anyone else could have possibly been perceived as posing any threat. She was killed in cold blood."

-- From a statement by the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) in response to the killing of Aysenur Eygi, an American peace activist attending a protest in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Eygi was shot by Israeli forces, according to eyewitnesses and her family, who said they watched a video of the event. Eygi is one of several Americans killed by the IDF in the West Bank – including journalist Shireen Abu Akleh – and in response the US has done nothing beyond asking Israel to investigate its own crimes.
