THE BIG NEWS

Police Raid Small Town Newspaper, Scare Elderly Woman to Death

On Friday, local police raided the Marion County Record, a small, but punchy, family-owned newspaper, as well as the home of their 69-year-old editor and chief, Eric Meyer, according to the Kansas Reflector. They seized computers and phones, injuring one reporter's finger by ripping her phone out of her hand.

The warrant for the search indicated the Marion Record was suspected of "identity theft" of a local restaurateur, Kari Newell, whose history of drunk driving and driving without a license had been leaked to the paper. Per the Kansas Reflector:

A reporter with the Marion Record used a state website to verify the information provided by the source. But Meyer suspected the source was relaying information from Newell’s husband, who had filed for divorce. Meyer decided not to publish a story about the information, and he alerted police to the situation.
“We thought we were being set up,” Meyer said.
Police notified Newell, who then complained at a city council meeting that the newspaper had illegally obtained and disseminated sensitive documents, which isn’t true. Her public comments prompted the newspaper to set the record straight in a story published Thursday.

Meyer thinks police were waiting for an excuse to harass the paper, which has published critical stories about the chief of police, Gideon Cody.

Meyer's 98-year-old mother, a co-owner of the paper, who witnessed the raid of their home, passed away Saturday. The Marion Record is attributing her death to the stress of the incident.

Death Toll from Hawaii Wildfire Climbs to 93

The deadliest wildfire on American soil in over a century has claimed at least 93 lives, a number expected to grow as many remain unaccounted for. K-9 search teams have searched only 3 percent of the disaster area, per the New York Times. Maui saw the worst of the fire, with Lahaina looking like Pompeii, with thousands of buildings burned to a gray crisp; the Maui Emergency Management Agency estimates that it will cost over $5 billion to rebuild. Hawaii's warning and crisis response systems seems to have dramatically failed, per the Times, with none of Maui's 80 warning sirens activated by local or state authorities, per the Times. In Lahaina, firevhyrdrants ran dry, forcing firefighters to brave the flaming town to mount rescue operations. Residents report the most immediate and substantial help has come from an informal network of Hawaiian volunteers, while state and federal aid has been slow to arrive, per the Washington Post.

Sam Bankman-Fried Sent to Jail for Witness Tampering

A federal judge revoked SBF's bail after he determined that he likely tampered with two witnesses, per the Financial Times, saying in a brief that "there is no condition or combination of conditions of release that will assure that the defendant will not pose a danger to other persons or the safety of the community." Prosecutors suspect that SBF had leaked portions of the diary of Caroline Ellison, his former lover and head of alleged money-laundering entity Alameda Research, to the New York Times. Bankman-Fried tried to contact a potential witness and former colleague, asking them to “see if there’s a way for us to have a constructive relationship, use each other as resources when possible, or at least vet things with each other.” I don't think this is the best time to network Sam! It's been quite the fall for the "wunderkind" since he hanging out with Bill Clinton and Tony Blair in the Bahamas.

PARTING WORDS

“What was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize.’ The response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.’”
