Minnesota Unions Call for Statewide Strike

Minnesota labor unions, business owners and community organizations are calling for a statewide strike on Friday, January 23, in response to the federal death squads that have continued terrorizing people, especially in Somali, Latino and Asian communities, according to Labor Notes and the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation. They are urging people all over to conduct “no work (except for emergency services), no school, and no shopping.” They have the following demands: 

  • ICE must leave Minnesota now.
  • The agent who killed Renee Good must be held legally accountable.
  • No additional federal funding for ICE in the upcoming Congressional budget and ICE be investigated for human and constitutional violations of Americans and our neighbors.
  • Minnesotan and national companies to become 4th Amendment Businesses – cease economic relations with ICE and refuse ICE entry or using their property for staging grounds.

Workers elsewhere have already signed on. New York unions and organizations are hosting a solidarity mass rally and march in Manhattan on January 23 at 4 p.m., including 1199SEIU, 32BJ, Teamsters, UAW, PSC-CUNY and NYC-DSA. The United Federation of Teachers is also requesting folks wear black during the day on Friday in solidarity. 

“Working people, our schools and our communities are under attack. Union members are being detained commuting to and from work, tearing apart families. Parents are being forced to stay home, students held out of school, fearing for their lives, all while the employer class remains silent,” Chelsie Glaubitz Gabiou, president of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, said in a statement. “Our labor federations are encouraging everyone to participate on January 23rd. It’s time for every single Minnesotan who loves this state and the notion of truth and freedom to raise their voices and deepen their solidarity for our neighbors and coworkers living under this federal occupation.” Please see below for an example of how pissed off Minnesotans are.

Minnesotans Force Jan. 6 Insurrectionist to Run Away 

Hundreds of Minnesotans this Saturday chased off far-right extremist Jake Lang, a pardoned Jan. 6 insurrectionist, after he tried and failed to host a pro-ICE rally that only drew 10 people, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune and the Washington Post. Lang, who wore a military vest with patches that said “Infidel” and “47,” initially screamed bigotry about Muslims. But then he switched from screaming to crying as counterprotesters surrounded him, and struck him with snowballs, silly string, water balloons and water guns until he was visibly afraid and ran away. Let’s remember that his indictment over the Jan. 6 insurrection described how he “repeatedly, and strategically, attacked the officers guarding the Capitol” with a baseball bat. “Specifically, he can be seen striking the officers with the bat at the following times: 4:54.58 p.m.; 4:56.30 p.m.; 4:56.44 p.m.; 4:57.13 p.m.; 4:57.15 p.m.; 4:57.21 p.m.; 4:57.26 p.m.; 4:57.32 p.m.; 4:58.06 p.m.; 4:58.29 p.m.; 4:59.10 p.m.; 4:59.32 p.m.; 4:59.49 p.m.; 4:59.51 p.m.; 4:59.54 p.m.; and 4:59.58 p.m.” What’s that saying about karma again? Anyway, Minnesotans ran off that fascist traitor, who lives in Florida and should stay inside his house and never come out again. 

Trump Selling Seats on Gaza Shadow Government for $1 Billion

His so-called Board of Peace, whose charter is secret, will be made up of world leaders and tasked with overseeing “next steps” in Gaza, according to the Associated Press. A $1 billion bribe buys permanent membership; otherwise members will serve a three-year term, no bribe required. Cyprus, Greece, Jordan and Pakistan said yesterday they’d received invitations to join; Albania, Australia, Argentina, Canada, Egypt, India, Paraguay and Turkey received earlier invites. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accepted his invitation to join, as did Vietnam’s Communist Party chief, To Lam. Trump has big plans for the board. Per the AP:

In letters sent Friday to world leaders inviting them to be “founding members,” Trump said the Board of Peace would “embark on a bold new approach to resolving global conflict.”
That could become a potential rival to the U.N. Security Council, the most powerful body of the global entity created in the wake of World War II. The 15-seat council has been blocked by U.S. vetoes from taking action to end the war in Gaza, while the U.N.’s clout has been diminished by major funding cuts by the Trump administration and other donors.

That’s the new tariff Trump is imposing on imports from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom if those nations don’t help him get Greenland. He’ll increase levies to 25 percent on June 1 if he doesn’t have a deal for the island by then. The tariffs are necessary, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday, because colonizing Greenland is a national emergency. Why? Because it would stop future national emergencies. You see?  At least one fellow Republican is calling bullsh*t on that non-logic: “There’s no emergency with Greenland. That’s ridiculous,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said yesterday. “And the idea by the secretary that, ‘Oh, this is to prevent an emergency.’ Now we’re declaring emergencies to prevent emergencies?” He added, “That would lead to endless emergencies.” Thousands of people marched in Greenland and Denmark this weekend to protest Trump’s imperialism, telling the NYT that “they had reached a breaking point after Mr. Trump repeatedly suggested that the United States would take Greenland, a semiautonomous part of Denmark, ‘one way or the other,’ and that it would happen ‘whether they like it or not.’” Some responded to the rapist-in-chief in kind by carrying signs that said “No means no.” Others wore red caps spoofing MAGA that bore the phrase “Make America Go Away.” In Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, protesters stood near the US consulate, played traditional drums and chanted the island’s Greenlandic name, Kalaallit Nunaat. “There is a lot of unrest inside people right now,” said Kristian Johansen, 67, who helped organize the protest. “Every new statement makes it worse.”
