Grand Jury Indicts Trump on  Four Counts for His Involvement in the Plot and Attempt to Overturn the Results of the 2020 Election

Former President Donald Trump is facing his second federal indictment after a grand jury, a body of his fellow citizens, concluded there was enough evidence to charge him with four counts. They are as follows, per the New York Times:

  • Conspiracy to defraud the United States: For the many ways he and co-conspirators used to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election. (Maximum 5-year sentence)
  • Conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding: For conspiring to interrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election during the January 6th insurrection and the events leading up to it. (Maximum 20-year sentence)
  • Obstruction of, or attempt to obstruct, an official Proceeding: This charge is also related to the obstruction of the vote certification. Hundreds of Jan. 6-ers have already been charged with this crime. (Maximum 5-year sentence)
  • Conspiracy to Violate Civil Rights: This charge involves efforts “injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate” people to stop them from enjoying their constitutional rights. In this case, the right to have a president that was actually elected. Fittingly, this law has often been used to prosecute the Klu Klux Klan, according to the Washington Post. (Maximum 5-year sentence)

The indictment also detailed the activities of six unnamed co-conspirators who fit the descriptions of known Trump associates, including Rudy Guiliani, Sidney Powell, and other lawyers and officials who tried to engineer a legal basis for Trump's coup.

The indictment includes some previously unknown damning episodes, including Trump telling Vice President Pence "You’re too honest" for not submitting to pressure from Trump to interfere in the election certification. Trump is certainly the center of the prosecution's case, but the indictment is a clear reminder how he was aided by Republicans at multiple levels of government who would turn on anyone who disagreed, such as in the case of Rusty Bowers.  

Trump has been summoned to appear before Federal District Court in Washington Thursday afternoon.

Georgia DA Investigating Trump Bombarded with Racist Threats; Instructs Staff to Focus on Safety as Indictment Approaches

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Black woman, has been receiving a deluge of racist emails and voicemails for investigating Trump for his attempt to steal the electoral votes of the state in the 2020 presidential election, according to Talking Points Memo. She's warning her staff to take precautions for their safety as her office is expected to drop charges on Trump before September 1st, emphasizing her point by including contents of vile hate email with subject line "Fani Willis = Corrupt N*****."

“I am sending to you in case you are unclear on what I and my staff have come accustomed to over the last 2 ½ years,” Willis wrote in an email, where she highlighted the threats. “I guess I am sending this as a reminder that you should stay alert over the month of August and stay safe.”

She's, admirably, undeterred.

“I have every intention of doing my job,” Willis wrote.

Michigan to Give Pregnant Flint Residents $1,500 and $500 Per Month in Non-Means Tested Program

As I've said, the progressive Midwest stays winning. The $35 million pilot program, called Rx Kids, will start in January of 2024 in Flint, Michigan, according to Michigan Advance. The initiative is aimed to address the devastating 50 percent poverty rate among children poverty in Flint, a city devastated by de-industrialization and poisoned water. The program is expected to improve maternal mortality rates and childhood development – poverty, it turns out, is extremely bad for children's long-term health cognitive development.

The cash payments will not be means tested, a break from other pilots that determined eligibility through income or through residence in low-income neighborhoods. And a large chunk of the funding is through federal TANF bloc grants, meaning other states could replicate the program. Other guaranteed income programs and pilots, nationally and globally, have been resounding successes.
