Little Food, Water in Florida Concentration Camp

There are now hundreds of people crammed into Trump’s new concentration camp and enduring torturous conditions, including a lack of food and water, and toilets that don’t flush, according to the Miami Herald and CBS News. Detainees are not allowed to bathe, brush their teeth, receive necessary medical care or speak confidentially with their attorneys. There are no clocks inside the facility, and little light comes through the heavy tent walls, “making it difficult for them to know whether it is day or night.”

“I don’t know their motive for doing this, if it’s a form of torture. A lot of us have our residency documents and we don’t understand why we’re here,” one man said on a call from inside the facility. Another said he is “on the edge of losing my mind. I’ve gone three days without taking my medicine. It’s impossible to sleep with this white light that’s on all day.” That man said officials took away his Bible, which had been helping him keep it together. One prisoner, Cuban reggaeton artist Leamsy La Figura, said that officials bring them just one meal to eat every day, and it’s full of maggots. He said he hadn’t been allowed to bathe in four days. The camp can imprison up to 5,000 people. Already state officials are preparing to build a second one, which will imprison another 2,000 several hundred miles north at Camp Blanding, a Florida National Guard base, according to The Florida Times-Union.

It’s unclear whether prisoners are in federal or state custody or how they’ll have access to a judge, the Miami Herald reported. “We don’t know what entity to call. Who is in charge out there?” said attorney Katie Blankenship, co-founder of legal services network Sanctuary of the South. “I don’t think anybody actually knows who is in charge.”

Fraudster Using AI to Pose as Marco Rubio

An investigation is underway after someone used artificial intelligence software to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio and contact a member of Congress, a US governor, and at least three foreign ministers of unnamed countries, according to The Washington Post. The fraudster left text messages and voicemails using AI to emulate Rubio’s writing style and voice. The State Department said it’s tightening its cybersecurity, the Financial Times reported, but wouldn’t say if the impersonator caused any harm. Both the State Department and the Bureau of Diplomatic Security are investigating. Impersonators have bedeviled the Trump administration for months, including when someone hacked White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles’s personal phone in May, then called “prominent Republicans and business executives” using a voice that sounded like her, The Wall Street Journal reported. The same month, the FBI warned that “malicious actors” were impersonating senior US officials using AI to target other senior officials and their contacts.

Far-Right Militia Claims Responsibility for Disabling Severe Weather Radar in Oklahoma

The founder of far-right extremist group Veterans on Patrol, Michael Meyer, said the man who damaged the News 9 weather radar system in Oklahoma City last weekend was part of “Operation Lone Wolf” and that there are “dozens” more people willing to carry out similar vandalism, Wired reported. Police yesterday arrested Anthony Tyler Mitchell, who they suspect destroyed the power to the News 9 NextGen Live Radar and knocked it offline. The station says the equipment is “vital” and “lifesaving” in its ability to track severe weather; it has since been restored.

Mitchell allegedly broke into the News 9 property after Meyer falsely posted to his Telegram channel: “Due to the recent weather weapon deployed against Texas, which resulted in a high number of child murders, efforts to eliminate this military treason are being escalated.” In an interview with Wired, Meyer said his group wants to disable the Next Generation Weather Radar Systems that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses to detect severe weather. “Anyone that's going out to eliminate a Nexrad, if they haven’t harmed life, and they’re doing it according to the videos that we’re providing, they are part of our group,” Meyer said. “We’re going to have to take out every single media’s capabilities of lying to the American people. Mainstream media is the biggest threat right now.”
