It’s Official: Platner Will Face Collins in November

Military veteran and oyster farmer Graham Platner won the Democratic primary in Maine last night with his tax-the-rich platform, the AP and NBC News reported, setting up a November race against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who ran unopposed. News outlets noted that the result was predictable; even with numerous scandals Platner faced hardly any competition on his side of the aisle. Two-term Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign in April after she failed to draw attention, though her name remained on the ballot. Also on the ballot was David Costello, a former government official who barely campaigned.

The race looms large in the midterms and what happens next is anyone’s guess. As NBC put it, “The Senate election has already become a battleground over the future of the Democratic Party and what voters think is most important, as Platner faces numerous controversies about his past conduct.” As Sam and Emma discussed recently, the entire Democratic establishment is against Platner’s anti-imperialist campaign and there are well-funded interests that want him gone.

Meanwhile, the AP determined yesterday that Republican Steve Hilton, a Trump-backed former Fox News host, will advance to the general election for governor in California. He’ll face Democrat and former Health and Human Service Secretary Xavier Becerra. The two pushed out billionaire Tom Steyer, the former hedge fund manager whose progressive platform drew an endorsement from Our Revolution, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ organization. We will relay more on last night's elections as final results come in.

Texas Screwworm Infestation Grows, Expands to New Mexico

But those attempts ignore the fact that insects have no concept of borders and go wherever they want. The screwworm is a fly larva that eats living flesh, including that of humans. Adult flies lay their eggs in open wounds. There are a dozen medications that can treat livestock, but as the Prospect points out, the cure for widespread infestation is to kill entire herds. That will cut the number of cattle even lower than its already 75-year low and drive up beef prices. So that cheeseburger could get a lot more expensive pretty soon.

Trump Promises Peace Is Near, Bombs Iran While Israel Bombs Lebanon

Just hours after Trump said on Tuesday that a deal to end the war with Iran was imminent, his ally, war criminal Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, bombed Lebanon and sent a new evacuation warning to Tyre, the nation’s fifth largest city, according to NBC News. The order included for the first time the city’s Christian Quarter, which had been left alone until now. Then the Israeli military bombed the area as people crammed into their cars to get out of the way. Israel’s attack follows their attack on Tyre near a Red Cross center, killing five people and wounding eight others. “I think we’re very close to having a very, very good, strong, powerful deal,” Trump said. Sir, I do not believe you. Part of my disbelief comes from Trump’s decision to bomb Iran last night after accusing the country of shooting down a US Apache helicopter, the WSJ reported. Iran’s deputy foreign minister said his country was not responsible for the attack, Al Jazeera reported. Officials there vowed to retaliate because they don’t want the current situation to become the “new normal.”

That’s how much the world’s largest banks gave to fossil fuel companies last year, according to a new report from a coalition of environmental groups. JPMorgan Chase gave the most, followed by Bank of America, Japanese banks MUFG and Mizuho Financial, Citigroup and Barclays. Together, the biggest banks loaned fossil fuel companies $64 billion more than they did in 2024, an increase of almost 8 percent. “The fossil fuel incumbents are not going out with a whimper,” Niko Lusiani, a climate and energy expert who edited the report, told the Guardian. “They are doubling down to expand an increasingly fragile, unreliable, risky energy system.”
