THE BIG NEWS

Israelis March in the Streets For A Hostage Deal That Bibi Won't Sign

Another round of large street protests has broken out in Israel after the IDF recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages in Gaza. The Israeli Health Ministry claimed that the hostages were recently shot at close range. Israeli police arrested dozens of protesters and used stun grenades to disperse others. Arnon Bar-David, the leader of the Histadrut, Israel's biggest labor union, called for a general strike beginning today, which extremist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is asking the country's attorney general to stop. "A deal is more important than anything else," said Bar-David. "We are getting body bags instead of a deal."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has deliberately undermined ceasefire negotiations for months. That hasn't exactly been a secret – Israeli ministers and hostage family members have accused Netanyahu of doing just that, and most political observers agree that Bibi's principal goal is remaining in power and avoiding a corruption trial. But that thundering insight has been lost on Joe Biden, the most fervently Zionist president in US history. Apparently, Biden only now recognizes Netanyahu's intransigence and is preparing to offer Israel a "final" ceasefire proposal this week, according to the court stenographers at Axios.

"You were abandoned on and on, daily, hour after hour, 331 days," said the mother of one of the killed hostages at his funeral. "You and so many beautiful and pure souls. Enough. No more."

Whatever new deal Biden offers, it's unlikely to include any inducements for Israel to change its policy of mass death and occupation. Vice President Kamala Harris said in a recent interview that she wouldn't restrict weapons shipments to Israel. And so she remains, like the rest of the Biden administration, an accomplice to Netanyahu's diplomatic deceptions and to the genocide he continues to perpetrate.

RFK's Ballot Jiujitsu Isn't Going As Planned

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had a crack plan to suspend his campaign and remove his name from the ballot in certain battleground states, assuming that this maneuver would help Donald Trump, whom he endorsed. Polling shows that RFK voters prefer Trump over Harris by a large margin, and Kennedy seems to be doing all he can to steer his supporters in Trump's direction. After stiffing Kennedy on a job in 2016, Trump has now made him and Tulsi Gabbard members of his transition team. With some states facing potentially narrow margins – think tens of thousands of votes – this kind of strategy could yield benefits for Trump, who, in classic fashion, has left Kennedy and his team to do all the work.

So far, Kennedy has successfully removed his name from several state ballots and decided not pursue ballot access in other states. But under current state election laws, it appears he's unable to take his name off of the Michigan and Wisconsin ballots. In North Carolina, the Board of Elections rejected RFK's request to be taken off the ballot. He's now suing the North Carolina State Board of Elections. Kennedy tried to get back on the ballot in New York, but a judge said that Kennedy lied about living in the state on a nominating petition. Such are the travails of a peripatetic, road-kill-loving politician with shifting loyalties.

That's the minimum number of days that NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams will spend on the International Space Station before they return to Earth. The two astronauts reached the the ISS on a new Boeing Starliner spacecraft on June 5, 2024. They were scheduled to stay for eight days, but issues with the Starliner caused NASA to pause the astronauts' return and try to figure out what's wrong with Boeing's would-be SpaceX competitor. Now, the Starliner, which recently started making an odd pinging noise, is set to return unoccupied to Earth while a SpaceX vehicle will bring the astronauts back in February 2025.

The Democratic presidential nominee finally gave the sit-down interview journalists demanded, and it was a decidedly mixed bag.

PARTING WORDS

"It’s been a hugely positive response. It’s probably the most relieved I’ve seen children. We hope it will continue over the next days, but what we really need is a cease-fire... Civilians need this war to end."

-- UNRWA spokesperson Louise Wateridge, speaking to the Washington Post about a relative pause in fighting in Gaza as aid agencies and medical workers began administering a mass polio vaccination campaign. Israel's war in Gaza has devasted health and sanitation infrastructure, which has resulted in the re-emergence of polio, which had previously been eradicated in the region.
