Israel Strikes Gaza and Lebanon on Oct. 7 Anniversary
With the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack looming, Israeli forces bombed Gaza and Lebanon throughout the weekend, killing dozens of people. In Lebanon, Israeli air strikes hit hospitals, ancient ruins, the suburbs of south Beirut, and a border crossing with Syria. The Israeli air force also struck inside Syria and in the occupied West Bank while an IDF unit has been threatening Irish peacekeepers on in southern Lebanon.
Since Hamas killed more than 1,000 Israelis in a surprise attack last Oct. 7 (with some also killed by indiscriminate fire by IDF troops enforcing the so-called Hannibal Directive), Israel has officially killed at least 42,000 people in Gaza. The actual toll could be several times higher. According to his own cabinet members, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sabotaged ceasefire talks and has no interest in peace.
Driven by vengeance and self-preservation, Netanyahu seems determined to expand his war throughout the region. Over the last year, Israeli forces have struck in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Iran, and in the Red Sea. From the Hezbollah pager attacks – which wounded and killed thousands of people – to assassinating Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran – the guy they were ostensibly negotiating with – Israel has shown a limitless appetite for violence, with no regard for international sanction or blowback. And seemingly with no plan for how this all ends.
Throughout all this horror, Israel has depended on a steady supply of weapons from the Biden administration. To the extent that it still matters, it's also benefitted from US diplomatic cover, as President Biden has done virtually nothing to stop Netanyahu from waging war without end. In the process, the president has been party to a horrendous series of war crimes – an ongoing genocide – while risking losing the election to Donald Trump. And he has shown countries outside the west that America's claims to moral authority have never been more hollow.

Musk Vamps For Trump At Bizarre Return to Site of Shooting
Donald Trump and Elon Musk made a joint appearance at a rally in Butler, PA, at the exact same place where a shooter winged Trump on July 13. The gathering was another example of plutocracy in action: billionaire hedge funder and Trump mega-donor John Paulson warmed up the crowd before Trump took the stage.
Trump presented his return to Butler as some kind of milestone on his march back to the White House and a way of honoring Corey Comperatore, the Trump supporter who was shot dead at the July rally. Musk introduced Musk – who he once insulted as a groveling half-bankrupt entrepreneur desperate for government cash – as "a truly incredible guy." A leering, wide-eyed Musk, wearing an Occupy Mars t-shirt, jumped on stage and said that electing Trump was essential for preserving American democracy.
The photos and memes of a zombie-faced Musk barely jumping off the ground, his belly exposed, hands up for Trump, might be embarrassing. But they signal Musk's intention of doing anything he can to put Trump back in office.
Even Republicans Are Asking Supporters to Stop Spreading Hurricane Lies
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, politicians and government officials throughout the southeast have struggled with a tidal wave of false information, some of it crafted by top Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who wrote on X, "Yes they can control the weather. It's ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can't be done."
Donald Trump, MAGA influencers, and (of course) Elon Musk have spread lies about FEMA running out of money, migrants taking relief funds, and aid not coming through hard-hit communities when it very much was. Some of it is classic post-disaster conspiracizing, but it's been supercharged by the paranoid, low-info MAGA media machine. And politicians from both parties are saying it's a problem.

Reportedly Harris issued the usual expressions of concern about humanitarian suffering in a war she's helping perpetuate. Besides that: TBD. There are more than 200,000 Muslim voters in Michigan, which Biden won by about 154,000 votes in 2020. via NYT.
- Get Ready for Hurricane Milton, Our Next Disaster With large parts of the southeastern US still assessing the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico and could hit the western coast of Florida on Wednesday. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency yesterday. via CBS News.
