THE BIG NEWS

Israel Cuts Promised Aid to Gaza in Half, Continues Killing Gazans Despite Ceasefire Deal

Hamas isn’t returning the dead bodies of hostages fast enough for Israel, so Israeli officials are slashing aid promised in the ceasefire deal and failing to open the Rafah border crossing with Egypt as promised, Al Jazeera reported. They’re also considering suspending the import of fuel and cooking oil, according to the NYT.

The truce between Israel and Hamas called for Hamas to immediately hand over the bodies of all 28 hostages. But as the AP reported, it also acknowledged that Israel’s total destruction of Gaza might make that job difficult and “provided a mechanism if that didn’t happen, saying Hamas should share information about deceased hostages and ‘exert maximum effort’ to carry out the handover as soon as possible.” By late Tuesday night, Hamas had returned eight bodies. According to Israel, that wasn’t good enough. Officials notified the United Nations that it would only allow 300 aid trucks daily into Gaza starting today, half the number it agreed to. “Three hundred is not enough,” said Al Jazeera reporter Hani Mahmoud. “It’s not going to change anything.” The International Red Cross, United Nations and the World Health Organization agreed, saying even the agreed-to 600 aid trucks wasn’t enough and urging Israel to open all crossings into Gaza and to hasten medical supplies.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military has continued to shoot Gazans to death. Shortly before telling the UN they were going back on their word yesterday, Israeli forces killed at least nine Palestinians in northern and southern Gaza. The two years of genocide and the repeated betrayal by Israeli officials have left Palestinians with “little hope that the ceasefire will lead to lasting peace or an end to the occupation,” The Real News Newtwork reported. One Gaza resident, Nusfat Modin, told TRNN, “There is no optimism. You can’t negotiate with these people. A deal, no deal – we have no hope. No one – ask anyone.”

ICE Forcing Detainees into Straitjackets, Including During Long-Haul Flights

Immigration officials are forcing already-shackled detainees into full-body straitjackets called the WRAP, in some cases for hours at a time, including during long-haul deportation flights. Associated Press reporters identified “multiple examples” of the restraint during deportation flights dating to 2020, including at least seven this year; they identified a dozen fatal cases over the last decade “where local police or jailers around the US used the WRAP and autopsies determined ‘restraint’ played a role in the death.” One detainee, a Nigerian man, recounted to the AP how immigration agents woke him and other detainees in the middle of the night, saying they were being deported to Ghana, though none had ever been there. The agents shackled their hands and feet, and when they asked to speak to an attorney, the agents refused and then stuffed them all into WRAPs, which they were forced to endure for their 16-hour flight. The man, part of a lawsuit against the federal government, spoke to the AP from the displacement camp in Ghana where he now lives. “It was just like a kidnapping,” he said.

Young Republicans Fantasize About Slavery and Rape, Leaked Chats Show

What do young Republicans talk about when they think no one is listening? According to 2,900 pages of chats sent between January and August and obtained by Politico, they talk about their love for Hitler, white supremacy, gas chambers and burning people alive; how rape is “epic”; and how anyone other than straight white Christians in perfect health deserves slurs, abuse, and death. Those are the discussions between members of a Telegram chat for Leaders of Young Republicans groups in Arizona, Kansas, New York and Vermont, and they’re a reflection of their GOP in general. As Politico chronicles: “Last month, Trump posted an artificial intelligence-generated video that showed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a sombrero beside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, whose fabricated remarks were about trading free health care for immigrant votes – a false, long-running GOP trope. The sombrero meme has been widely used to mock Democrats as the government shutdown wears on. In his 2024 campaign, Trump spread false reports of Haitian migrants eating pets and, at one of his rallies, welcomed comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage’ and joked about Black people ‘carving watermelons’ on Halloween.”

That’s how many people whose visas the State Department said it revoked because of their remarks about Republican youth leader Charlie Kirk after he got shot in the neck and died. “The United States has no obligation to host foreigners who wish death on Americans,” the department said on social media, adding that it will “continue to identify” visa holders who “celebrated” Kirk’s death. Per the WSJ, the agency revoked the visas of people from Argentina, Mexico and South Africa, but didn’t say what kinds of visas they held, when they were revoked, or whether the people were in the US at the time.
