  • US Launches Air Strikes Against Iraqi Militants In response to a drone attack that injured three US troops, President Joe Biden ordered a retaliatory air strike against Iranian-sponsored militias in Iraq. Armed groups have stepped up attacks on US positions since Israel began its most recent military campaign in Gaza. via ABC News.
  • Israeli Bombing Kills UN Aid Worker and Relatives An Israeli air strike in Gaza killed a longtime UN aid worker and 70 members of his extended family. At least 136 UN workers have died in the conflict. via The Guardian and UN chief Antonio Guterres.
  • Israel Working on Expelling Palestinians from Gaza Echoing comments from other Israeli government officials, Prime Minister Netanyahu said yesterday that his government was pushing for "voluntary immigration" from Gaza. With the Palestinian enclave's infrastructure and housing devastated by Israeli air strikes, many observers fear that Israel will use the opportunity to force Gazans into Egypt's Sinai peninsula. via Yisrael Hayom.
  • US Launches Operation to Secure Red Sea Shipping Lanes The United States is now leading a multi-lateral naval operation to stymie attacks on cargo ships by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The Houthis are focusing their attacks on ships leaving or heading to Israel. The attacks caused some shipping companies to reroute traffic around the southern tip of Africa. via Associated Press.
  • At Least 100 Dead in a Single IDF Air Strike Israeli forces bombed a refugee camp in central Gaza on Monday, killing at least 100 people. Overall, 250 Palestinians were reported killed in 24 hours on Monday. via PBS News Hour.
  • Iranian Commander Killed in Syria An apparent Israeli air strike killed a high-level commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the military organization that directs Iranian policy in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Iranian officials promised retribution for the attack. via BBC News.

Pope Francis: Our Hearts Are In Bethlehem

Pope Francis has amplified his criticism of Israel's war in Gaza. "Tonight, our hearts are in Bethlehem, where the Prince of Peace is once more rejected by the futile logic of war, by the clash of arms that even today prevents him from finding room in the world," he said in a Christmas Eve homily. Praying for peace in Israel and Palestine, the Pontiff lamented the "desperate humanitarian situation in Gaza" while calling for Hamas to release Israeli hostages. He had previously described an Israeli air strike on a Gaza church as "terrorism."

They're expected to be joined by university workers affiliated with the Teamsters union, and this time, the strikes could affect the entire CSU system. via ABC and The Tribune.
  • Apple Watches Taken Off Store Shelves Due to a patent dispute over its blood-oxygen tracking feature, Apple has been forced to take certain models of its smart watches out of stores. Company engineers have been furiously working to retool the feature. via CNN.

Some sources put the number of dead journalists and media workers closer to 100. Israel's military campaign in Gaza has been one of the deadliest for journalists in recorded history.
