IDF Kills At Least 274 Palestinians While Rescuing 4 Hostages

On Saturday, Israeli forces launched a large daytime hostage-rescue operation in Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp that killed at least 274 Palestinians. Israeli forces quietly infiltrated the camp – with some disguised in an aid vehicle, according to observers, which would be a violation of international law – and then stormed two apartments where Israeli hostages were being held.

The operation reportedly included weeks of preparation, including drills with models of the apartments in question. U.S. intelligence personnel, including some who were on the ground in Israel, helped pinpoint the locations of hostages. But the supposedly precise operation quickly devolved into a massacre, with hundreds of Palestinians killed by Israeli gunfire and airstrikes. Israel claimed that 100 Palestinians died while US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, in classic nothing-to-see-here fashion, said that the true death toll may never be known. Hamas stated that three hostages, one of them a US citizen, also died.

The brutal toll of the operation drew condemnation from a number of world leaders, especially in the Middle East. "Egypt holds Israel legally and morally responsible for this flagrant assault," said the Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs. European Union foreign minister Josep Borrell called it a "massacre." Bodies lay in pieces amidst destroyed apartment buildings. The few remaining Palestinian healthcare facilities still running were inundated with hundreds of injured and dying patients.

The next day, Israeli ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot resigned from President Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition. Gantz called for new elections, an investigative inquiry into Hamas' October 7 attack, and for Netanyahu to accept the ceasefire deal brokered by the US, Egypt, and Qatar. "I demand Netanyahu to stand clearly behind it and do everything in order to make it happen," said Gantz.

Their defections won't immediately bring down Netanyahu's government, but it contributes to its fragility. Gantz is considered most likely to succeed Netanyahu, should the opportunity arise. For now, Israel's president continues to promise "total victory," killing scores of Palestinians daily while resisting the ceasefire deal sitting on the table.

Judge Orders Striking UC Academics To Get Back to Work

An Orange County Superior Court judge ordered striking workers on six campuses in the University of California system to end their labor stoppage and return to work. Judge Randall J. Sherman ruled that the strike was "damag[ing] to students' education." Union membership had approved the current strike through June 30. Involving more than 48,000 academic workers at 10 schools, the strike was authorized in response to the violent attacks and police arrests of student protesters at UCLA and elsewhere. The strike is momentous both for the number of workers involved and for their decision to stand up for students' speech rights.

Exactly How Many "Gifts" Has Clarence Thomas Received?

Last year's financial disclosures from Supreme Court justices reveal that Justice Clarence Thomas took two trips in 2019 with Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow. One of them was a luxurious getaway to Bali that may have cost half a million dollars. According to one outside accounting, Thomas has received more than $4 million in "gifts" in his time on the court. The extent of the billionaire largesse heaped on Thomas wasn't really understood until a series of reports emerged last year in ProPublica. The subsequent criticism has caused Thomas to disclose more information about his deep financial ties with Crow.

That's how many years it's been since Leonard Peltier, a 79-year-old Native American man who was convicted in the murders of two FBI agents almost five decades ago, has received a full parole hearing. No witnesses ever identified Peltier in the gunfight that killed the agents, and two of his co-defendants were found not guilty after they said they were acting in self-defense. Over the years, numerous criminal-justice activists and reformers have called for Peltier's release. Now in poor health, this may be his last chance at regaining some measure of freedom.
