THE BIG NEWS

ICE Agents Trained to Break Law, Whistleblower Says

The US government is lying about Immigration and Customs Enforcement and systematically teaching new immigration agents to violate constitutional rights, a former ICE trainer-turned-whistleblower said yesterday at a congressional hearing, The Hill, The Minnesota Star Tribune and the LA Times reported. Ryan Schwank resigned from ICE on Feb. 13 after watching the agency “dismantle” its training program, including cutting firearms instruction. Schwank joined the agency in 2021 as legal counsel.

“They ceased all of the legal instructions regarding use of force. This means that cadets are not taught what it means to be objectively reasonable, the very standard which the law requires them to meet when deciding whether or not to use deadly force,” Schwank told lawmakers. “Our jobs as instructors are to teach them so well that they can make split second decisions about what they can and cannot do in life or death situations.” Schwank also said DHS officials told him to teach officer candidates that they only needed an administrative removal order to stop people, not a judicial warrant. “Never in my career had I received such a blatant or unlawful order,” Schwank said.

DHS denies everything and says all agents have great training. Presumably that includes 53-year-old ICE agent Bradley Shaver, a racist ex-CBP officer who fired his Glock 19 in a Minneapolis-area Hampton Inn late last year while trying to change out part of a handle, sent a bullet into the neighboring room and responded by “cursing and panicking” while the occupant next door inspected the bullet stuck in the headboard, as the Sahan Journal reported. The hearing yesterday was hosted by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA). As with the Feb. 3 hearing on ICE conduct, at which the brothers of Renee Good spoke of their deep sense of loss after Jonathan Ross executed their sister, zero Republicans attended.
