ICE Arrests Green Card-Holding Colombia Student For Palestine Activism

Mahmoud Khalil, a recent graduate student at Columbia University who was involved with Gaza solidarity protests, was arrested and disappeared by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement over the weekend. As of last night, twenty-four hours after his arrest, Khalil's lawyer had no idea where his client was.

Khalil, whose wife is eight months pregnant, has a green card, which is supposed to prevent someone from being summarily arrested and potentially deported, but the Trump administration has promised to expel pro-Palestinian protesters, likening them to terrorists.

"We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported," Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X yesterday.

"Khalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization," the Department of Homeland Security told Drop Site News. "ICE and the Department of State are committed to enforcing President Trump’s executive orders and to protecting U.S. national security."

The Trump administration recently pulled $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University on the grounds that the school wasn't doing enough to tackle anti-semitism – which really means they weren't doing enough to stop pro-Palestine protest. Columbia has shown every indication that it's ready to kowtow to Trump's authoritarian designs. In a statement released yesterday, the university didn't mention Khalil when it declared, "Columbia is committed to complying with all legal obligations and supporting our student body and campus community."

Israel Cuts Electricity To Gaza As It Prepares For More Ethnic Cleansing

After blocking all imports entering Gaza last week, the Israeli government cut off electricity to the besieged Palestinian territory. The blackout has shut down a desalination plant that was providing crucial water treatment for central Gaza. Hamas has reportedly indicated a desire to proceed to the next phase of prisoner swaps, but Israel has continued killing Gazans. Yesterday, Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the establishment of an "Emigration Authority" that would work to remove Gazans from Gaza. In short, more ethnic cleansing, more war crimes.

Trump Says We Might Get A Recession

In recent interviews, President Trump acknowledged that the US might be headed toward a recession, although he said that his chaotic austerity policies would eventually rejuvenate the economy (somehow). "Who knows?" he said to reporters when asked about the possibility yesterday. With the introduction of tariffs and widespread cuts in the federal bureaucracy, the stock market is down; consumer sentiment is down; prices of basic goods are up; and publicly traded companies are starting to warn investors that the DOGE cuts might hurt them.

Carney promised to defend Canada from Trump's economic warfare. Carney's expected to call a snap election soon, in which he'll be running against Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre. via NYT.
  • Another Small Plane Crash In An Urban Area A small plane crashed in Manheim Township, PA, yesterday afternoon. The five people onboard the plane were injured but survived. No one on the ground was hurt. via NBC News.
  • Whistleblower Says Meta Was Willing To Censor Chinese Users A whistleblower alleges that Meta "developed a censorship system for China" and made plans to cooperate with Chinese authorities' suppression of free speech and requests for sensitive user data. Mark Zuckerberg also allegedly "agreed to crack down on the account of a high-profile Chinese dissident living in the United States." via WaPo.
